Judges are supposed to follow the law above personal feelings - Unfortunately, some laws are made with an impartial secular tone while others are not

That's true, it's the system that is broken. You would hope that the judges would be pushing for changes to shit like this.

Yeah, I was talking to my girlfriend about this. She did a little research and found that the guy was left in prison by royal decree as a result of the outcry. Apparently the Saudis also started a child-abuse awareness campaign. Too late for the girl in question, and insufficient to address the religious fundamentalism that resulted in this barbarity. It seems the man was sentenced to death originally, but that the child's mother thought she needed the money more, and so had the death sentence commuted
