Never confuse apologist slogans with reality. 

If Islam were the "religion of peace", radical Muslims would be the most peaceful people on the planet.

If the Enlightenment and democratic ideals were the outgrowth of Christian teachings, the Dark Ages would have been the most Enlightened and free society imaginable. For some strange reason, it took some 1,500 years for "Christian ideals" to even surface and its only with the erosion of Christian power that these ideals have taken hold. 

Yet reality has no impact on apologetic slogans. Such is the power of True Scotsmen.

Personal take on it:

Do I believe in ghosts? In a way, yes.
Do I believe they're lost souls? No
Do I believe they're proof of an afterlife? No
Do I believe they have a remaining consciousness? No

I hold to the hypothesis that they're an image projected onto the fabric of reality that can be projected under certain conditions, like a film.

How about vertebrates.  They all have a common feature,  a spine.  Did he just take two generic vertebrates?

This is why it's so embarrassing when Christians try to shoehorn science into the bible story.  They generally know lots about the bible and piss all about science.  

Animals have very clear classification systems.  Genus.  Species that style of thing.  They have clear meanings.  So what exactly is a "sort"?

did you miss the part in the definition where is states "category of things"

Just my opinion on this:

My friend recently said to me that he thought our morality/ secular government is based on "christian values". It is a claim that totally baffles me. But then, what is "christian" is entirely arbitrary. If it means taking lessons straight out of their book, then that requires ignoring almost all of it. If it means looking at history, that means pretending most of it didn't happen. If it means basing it solely on a few cherry picked common sense principles from the bible, then yeah sure, but that's just common sense. I don't see where the "Christian" bit comes into it at all.

Sure, there have been good christians, but they weren't good because they were christians, or good at coming up with secular ideas because of their religious knowledge. "Death and torture to unbelievers" is about as unsecular as it gets.

But then I don't know what people mean exactly when they say "Christian values" as there are as many versions of christianity as there are christians. I did a whole thread before about what morality you can learn from christianity that isn't obvious to any well balanced atheist, and the answer was nothing, and it demonstrated common sense morality could be made worse as well.
