The way it's manufactured, the opponent's light saber would cut the cross guard off before it stopped it because the cross guard is generated independently from the main light saber out of its own section of the hilt. And I agree, a true Jedi wouldn't need the light saber cross guard. Perhaps, though, this can be chalked up to this villain being a Sith and not a true Jedi.
