You can. It just comes with imaginary penalties.

I suppose I could see why some do it then, though I don't really have an interest in pissing people off.  I'd much rather leave theists alone and have them do the same towards me.
You can't just leave theists alone because even if they don't directly bother you, they are still going to screw up society.  They have to be challenged at every turn because otherwise, they harm us all.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

Oh that takes the cake. I shoulda offered a prize for the best.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

I feel better and I don't think I'm going to have nightmares about it so perhaps I was further along than I thought. What is this "rapture" you're talking about? That's the second time I've heard that word this week but never before.

the rapture is what al mainstream Christendom is waiting for, although according to what Jesus said it should have already happened. Jesus is supposed to come a second time and all the Christians will be gathered u[p and just disappear some kind of way. In Matthew 24 Jesus describes the tribulation and his second coming and the rapture and says verily I say to you this generation shall not pass until all these things have happened.  The church either ignores this or, when confronted, comes up with some convoluted re-definition of the word "generation."

What denomenation are your parents? I don't understand devout Chistians who neve told you abot the rapture.

Yes I have been reading about something like that in my Christ Conundrum book. Where the disciples etc were expecting the Kingdom of God to come in their lifetime but it never did? It was never called the rapture though in that book.

To be honest I don't know what denomination my parents are. They're not orthodox like CofE (Church of England); we've hardly ever been in that sort of traditional church building except for marriages and funerals, and in fact none of the churches we've been to even had their own building as far as I can remember. At the moment they go to a Baptist church that meets in a school. But I've heard other words like Pentecostal in the past and my dad is very keen on evangelical TV preachers like Benny Hinn, Billy Grayam, and Joyce Meyer.

I think Pentecost has something to do  with the baptism of the holy spirit, speaking in tongues and whatnot. We used to do that at the Word of Faith churches I used to go to. If you look at my awful handwriting you might say I write in tongues. Wonder how to say fuck you in tongues.

The first time I heard somebody say Benny Hin was preaching on TV, I misheard and thought they said Benny Hill. I said get outta here.  My mother and them like to listen to Creflo Dollar. That man's name is an insult to my intelligence. I guess it's wrong to judge someone by their name, but still, a televangelist named Dollar? I would have at least changed my name.

Yep, there was a lot of speaking in tongues and I don't know what to call it but 'touching and fainting' at some of the churches we went to but the Baptist one they go to now is not like that, but still relatively happy-clappy. I tried speaking in tongues once and it's pretty easy to just talk gobbledegook and make it sound like a language, so that never convinced me at all as being divinely inspired, even when I was a Christian i.e. mine didn't sound any different to theirs and I knew mine was bullshit Wink

Don't get me started on televangelists. Everyone knows Billy Grayam was a fake - that there were stooges in his audience - but unfortunately my dad sees all that sort of stuff as, well, the Gospel Truth.

Too  bad we can't pray for our parents. They're so intelligent in other areas of life.  I hate what the church has done to my mother.

How many televangelists does it take to change a light bulb?

Just one. And if you would like for the message of light to continue, send in your check today.
