Many Christian faiths believe and teach about a future, end-times event when all true believers who are still alive before the end of the world will be taken from the earth by God into heaven. The term describing this event is "the Rapture."
Basically, they think that at the point where the world is almost at an end, all people who choose to follow God will disappear altogether from Earth and accepted into Heaven.
It's stupid really, especially since the Rapture is never truly mentioned in the Bible to begin with. It is just an opinion that many follow based on what they want to happen.

Thanks for the edification That never came up in the type of Christianity I was raised in. I never believed there was going to be an end of the world type event like that.

Not a problem. It's surprising to me how many people actually believe in the Rapture when, as I said above, it isn't directly mentioned in the Bible. But hey, people can believe whatever they want.

Didn't Kirk "Banana Man" Cameron make a shitty movie or two about the Rapture? I distinctly remember the small "Left Behind" craze of, what, a decade ago?

Yeah, I haven't cursed him since I deconverted, since he doesn't exist (in my opinion). There would literally be no point in it.
The only point in it is to piss off fundies who seem to think that doing it is some horrendous act. It has no effect on me, I don't care one way or the other, it's no more rational than cursing unicorns, but it does make the fundies freak out.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

I don't waste time cursing any god, and I don't think you have to do that to be an atheist.

Not sure if he did one, but there are certainly a few movies about the Rapture…and all of them are stupid.
Looked into it, and yes he did. The Left Behind Trilogy….joy.

I suppose I could see why some do it then, though I don't really have an interest in pissing people off. I'd much rather leave theists alone and have them do the same towards me.

I completely agree that it isn't necessary to becoming an atheist. However for me, doing it simply helped, if just a bit.

That's part of what's cool about being an atheist though, there are no (extra) rules. If you want to scream at imaginary characters for the fun of it, no one can "kick you out the club".

I feel better and I don't think I'm going to have nightmares about it so perhaps I was further along than I thought. What is this "rapture" you're talking about? That's the second time I've heard that word this week but never before.
the rapture is what al mainstream Christendom is waiting for, although according to what Jesus said it should have already happened. Jesus is supposed to come a second time and all the Christians will be gathered u[p and just disappear some kind of way. In Matthew 24 Jesus describes the tribulation and his second coming and the rapture and says verily I say to you this generation shall not pass until all these things have happened. The church either ignores this or, when confronted, comes up with some convoluted re-definition of the word "generation."
What denomenation are your parents? I don't understand devout Chistians who neve told you abot the rapture.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.
