What's the most face-palm-worthy statement you have ever heard from a priest/preacher

You Limeys and your extraneous As!

We spell that as 'extrneous'.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Quote:Just a guess. I know it sounds strange, but I've always assumed that those who occupy positions of alleged moral leadership would exemplify the morality they wish to inculcate.

Like teachers, coaches, scout masters, Protestant leaders...

Oh, wait, I almost forgot...you only get upset about the smaller per capita percentage of Catholic priests who have violated that trust. [Image: rolleyes.gif]

... and then shuffle the offenders off to other parishes and fresh victims while simultaneously issuing decrees of silence to the whole organisation. Exactly like schools don't.

It's not much of a selling point, to be honest. "The Catholic Church - fewer child rapists than you might expect."

The point is that in an organisation that preaches against sin and the corruption of modern society, there shouldn't be any.

It does answer your question, by making the point that the behavior is wrong in a moral "leader" no matter what you call it. Ergo, focusing on the verbiage is stupid.

And why is molestation reprehensible to you when teachers or Protestants commit it, but defensible when a Catholic priest commits it? And why is "But Daddy, they do it more!" a sound defense, in your eyes?

I get upset about all molesters. It just so happens that we're here on an atheist forum discussing religious issues, and that means your church is going to be one of the targets.

Wow. Very generous.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

What can I say? I'm a nice guy.

And you gotta be nice to a guy who says, "but hey, those old men who'd taken a vow of celibacy were fucking teenagers, not kids -- lay off."

1. Circumcision WAS sign of Israel's covenant with God.
2. Priests tend to be reasonably well educated having a bachelor's degree and another four years of seminary.

So, this was probably either a wry observation, a bit of hyperbole about the circumcision covenant or both.

And in the context of his talk on the subject of circumcision in the early Church, it may have sounded stupid (to you), but he was technically correct.
Circumcision got started because some guy like giving BJs on baby boys and he needed an excuse.  So he claimed that it was a religious practice and he was able to keep sucking boys' bloody penises throughout time, even to this very minute.

Source, please.

I already provided evidence from the Washington Post that this is EXACTLY what happened in some school districts, Steve. Either you weren't paying attention or you ignored this inconvenient truth.

But I agree with you that the Bishops should not have taken the approach that they did.

Why? [Image: shrug.gif]

Is it your understanding that Christians must be perfect in order to be members of the Church?

Interesting. I wonder why professional psychologists use these different terms then. [Image: hmmm.gif]

Still, have to ask...would you make any distinction between a college senior having sex with a 18-year-old co-ed v. an eight-year-old girl?

'Cause those two different terms apply to those two females differently. So, maybe it does matter...

As you know (but fail to acknowledge), I have said repeatedly in multiple threads that the priests who committed the crimes should be prosecuted and sent to jail. The bishops who failed to act appropriately in their handling of these cases should be retired.

The ONLY reason I have invoked a tu quoque defense at all is to point out the hypocrisy of those (well, you actually) who absolutely lose all sense of reason when it concerns the Catholic Church, but you're silent as the grave when it comes to secular leaders who commit the same crime in greater numbers.

I just did a quick search...the Jared/Subway scandal got a whopping 14 posts.

If a Catholic priest had done what he did, y'all would be going hundred for hundreds of pages....
