It also didn't help that his opinions come from a book. Only a thinking person can summon up their own.

LV - I think you make an excellent point, here; America's love of vengeance is what largely drives the popular support enjoyed by both the Prison-Industrial Complex and the execution of our prisoners (often in ways that have nothing to do with the Death Penalty).

Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love. Prison should not be about punishment, but taking criminals and making them into functioning members of society.

I left out something very important from my point, above. I meant to say that our love of vengeance, which has its roots in our odd brand of evangelical, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" fire-and-brimstone, god as the great Watcher and Punisher, mentality, is what drives our PIC and Death Penalty addictions. I didn't grow up in a culture that believes the populous should worship any individuals, or group of individuals. The people who run my country are supposed to be public servants who work for us, in exchange for taxation, whether they actually do or not. one of the founding principles of the US being "no taxation without representation", after all. So I'm not eager to worhip anyone, but if I'm going to dedicate my life to someone, he'd better make it worth my while.
A god worth following is someone who always gives his/her followers everything they need. Some christians like to claim that's what their god does, yet children die while their parents pray for magical healing, and life is as hard for a christian in a muslim dominant country as a muslim's life would be in a christian dominated country. A god worth following is someone who shows him/herself in a way that does not leave people debating the existence of gods thousands of years after this god starts divinely inspiring people. A god worth worshiping would never demand worship, or say that questioning him/her is one of the biggest crimes you could commit. A god I want to worship is the kind of person I try to be. I don't always come out on top when I try to be generous and kind, and I try to rein in my anger when someone wrongs me, but my anger is more justfied than any god's because I've actually lost something substantial by being too kind. What's his excuse?

I don't want a god that causes childhood illnesses like Tay Sachs, and I don't really want one that "allows" it for "mysterious reasons". I like the idea of a heaven (or something similar), despite the concept of living for forever being kind of weird. God cannot affect our universe, so he can't cause or prevent problems. Still, he feels sorry for us and would like us to have a better existence. He does have the power to attach "souls" to us, so when we die, we can go to Heaven, which is much better than Earth. And even that is a pretty stupid concept of a god. It seems there are many theists with the type of personality that is willing (perhaps even eager) to worship and submit to the biggest thing available. So much so that some can't seem to grasp the concept of believing in a god but not worshipping it.
On the whole, most atheists I've met seem to find the very idea of worship to be bizarre, and so the existence or not of the God in question is moot anyway. Is there something to this, I wonder? Could it be studied somehow? Feel free to send me a private message.
