"Were you there???"

"Were you there???"
"Yes, I was there.

What are you going to do, prove I wasn't?"

-Matt Dillahunty
Which is better:
To die with ignorance, or to live with intelligence?

Truth doesn't accommodate to personal opinions.
The choice is yours.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is God and there is man, it's only a matter of who created whom

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The more questions you ask, the more you realize that disagreement is inevitable, and communication of this disagreement, irrelevant.

Probably one of the craziest defenses of the bible. "God was there when it happened. He knows how the universe was made and how old it is."

Apparently the world was created a long time after the world discovered fire, the dinosaurs went extinct, and cave art was made in Spain.

"Were you there? Because God was."

Great. Now just prove that the Bible is actually God's word without biblical self reference.

I'm afraid that christians can't comprehend any amount of words past the number "One" unless they are coming from the language of Bible.

No, but my quantum entangled doppelganger was.

Yes. How many times do we hear this nonsense, even from a certain theist here?

He never did answer the question when I turned it on him...

One needn't be eyewitness to an event or a phenomenon to understand it. The example I frequently use is the interior of a star. Obviously, no human being has ever - EVER - see the inside of dear old Sol, but we have a pretty good idea how it operates.

Similarly to understanding how something works or how something happened without being in situ, we can suss out what is more or less likely to have happened. Science doesn't operate 'in the moment' - large gobs of it are historical in practice. By observing processes currently at work, as well and their causes and effects, we can examine Biblical claims of - for example - the Flood. We know how floods work, and the damage they often leave behind. It isn't a great or unjustified leap to extrapolate this to understanding what a global flood would have done. Since there is no evidence, either direct or extrapolative, for a world wide flood as describe in Genesis, we can be reasonable in the conclusion that it simply didn't happen.

So no, I wasn't there. Isn't it lucky I didn't need to be?

I think you need to calm down with the logic man. These aren't people we're talking about now, they're Christians.

Yeah, I was there, and I didn't see you there! Fuck you! Tongue

It's another sad attempt to reduce the whole of reasoning methods to nothing but guesswork, while putting blind faith and special pleading into your own method.

"No, but I defer to the experts. Were you there?"
"No, but I defer to holy book."

It's a question that doesn't really go anywhere. Both parties defer to the writings of other people, except that scientific studies can be tested by anyone with access to the proper equipment and education. It doesn't help the theist.
