Rcc thinks Charlie Hebdo is the devil

RE: Rcc thinks Charlie Hebdo is the devil
Would you clarify? I hate talking past people.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Interestingly, the Vatican newspaper quoted in the OP's article, L’Osservatore Romano, reported on a joint statement made by the Catholic Bishop of Evry-Corbeil-Essonnes, Michel Dubost, and  the  President of the French Muslim Council, Mohammed Moussaoui. This was back in 2012, following protests about a Charlie Hebdo depiction of Mohammed.

In the statement they said (amongst other things):

Quote:“the French Republic has as its motto: “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”

“we defend the right to freedom and, in particular, support freedom of expression within the law”.

Maybe someone should have told Francis?

Now that's how satire works.

That's ok satire. But there is satire that goes beyond what in my opinion is ok.

Funny how every religion looks at the "blasphemy" or "satire" of others and are fine with it, but when the ridicule is aimed at their own beliefs suddenly it is hands off.

Issac Hays did the voice for Chef on South Park, he had no problem with the cartoon making fun of Christians and Jews and atheists but quit when they got to his own Scientology. This was a cartoon that had a statue of Marry bleeding out of her ass. A cartoon that has Cartman calling his friend a "fucking Jew" and another episode where they had atheists shitting out of their mouths.

But what is missed in that cartoon that the right wingers and even liberals miss in hating it, is that it is not there just to "offend" but to get people to think, and to say, "If you cant laugh at yourself nobody will laugh with you". The common motif at the end of each episode has one of the Characters basically saying "We are all in this together despite our differences".

Now see here is the problem with trying to determine what is or is not offensive. Everyone has their own ideas of what is or is not offensive. Every single one of us can think of things that people print that offend us. So the problem is "Who gets to decide?". That becomes a problem with competing views. So in the civil west we simply put the only restrictions we can all agree on, and that is no acts of violence, or calls to violence. And we set limits as to age appropriate material, such as not selling porn to a 5 year old. But outside that, it does not matter what I like or you like because something at some point will offend both of us. We can only agree not to act out in violence when we get offended.

Blanket solutions of "never say this, or never depict that" are a dangerous game for any label to adapt. As far as speech, it can as it should, be taken only as a case by case basis and it depends.

Too true.

For example, I just started a religion where the letter "a" is the devil. I'm now mortally offended by it. Everyone has to stop using it.

Reasonable? [Fuck, I offended myself!]

Everything could be considered offensive to someone. As long as it's not being forced in your face, which is of course unreasonable, you don't have to read it. So don't read it if you don't like it. If it's not actively encouraging harm to be committed, then all is cool.

Fuck you asshole, I have that letter in my name and NOBODY PUTS ABBA IN THE CORNER.....(Note to self: Something tells me already had different color name here respond to that, cant place my finger on it,)

In all seriousness, on another website had a Jewish person join, and we of course treat them no differently, but no sorry if you have a superstition about not spelling the name of your God, Yahweh or Elohim or whatever, that's your bag.

RE: Rcc thinks Charlie Hebdo is the devil
Oh and just the other day, my mom and I went to our favorite breakfast place. Well the owners are Christians, and their electric sign switches out deals with the message "Have a blessed day", ok, BS but no that doesn't make them bad people, nor does it prevent us from eating there. But don't give me a fucking dirty look if I ask you not to say that to me or write it on my ticket when I leave. I wasn't demanding they don't do it with others, it is simply not my bag. Is it wrong for me to ask "Hey, if you want to wish me to have a good day, just say have a nice day".

If you are going to have that fucking attitude with your customers, then go all the way and don't be half assed about it and "Christians Only" sign on your door.

"Picked-on"?

Shit, they need to man up and grow a pair.  If they can't stand some fucking criticism, they can fuck right off -- they allegedly have god on their side, don't they? Tangentially supporting the murders of cartoonists for the victimless crime of blasphemy is like treating dandruff with decapitation*.

And for the record, I'm no dime-bag, I'm a full quarter-pound of killer kush.  Just sayin'.

The pin is not a trigger. It is actually a safety pin that keeps the trigger from popping off, which is what ignites the fuse.

You'd know this if you weren't an armchair warrior.

It makes allowances and can work around or even offer to help fix a problem, rather than just point out exaggerated perceived weakness in others. satirist seek out weakness to one end alone, and that is the exploitation of it.

I don't regard an organization which shelters child molesters, has in some places practiced the institutionalized abuse of young mothers, spent millions of dollars spreading disinformation about condoms so that people in Africa are dying of AIDS, fomented or supported genocide, and other misdeeds, as being worthy of my compassion, which I reserve for the more deserving -- such as people like you who are apologists for it.

You don't have the right to be free of offense.  Get over yourself. Is your god so weak that a few words or cartoons from mere mortals harm him? This is simply religionistas asserting that their feelings have primacy over those of anyone else.

*Thanks to the late Frank Zappa for the marvelous comparison.
