The Second Coming already happened???
March 6, 2016 at 10:06 am
I used to wonder (sometimes out loud, to the irritation of my pastor) about these Bible verses while growing-up in my fundamentalist evangelical Christian church:
Quote:Luke 9.27: "I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."
Mark 9.1: And he said to them, "I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."
Matthew 16.28: "I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
Of course, fundamentalists can play games with these verses, but it seems to me that Jesus thought that the end of world would happen within a generation of his lifetime. Saint Paul seems to have also thought this.

Yeah. Jesus wanted his followers to give away all their possessions, up to the shirt off their backs, because he thought the world was going to end very soon. Decades from then, not thousands of years.

Gee, a claimant to being the Son of God makes a single factual error, it totally falsifies the claim.
Looks like the Christers fell for a charlatan.
Go Jews !!!

Yup, that is the sensible interpretation. Most of the things he said make no sense in any other context, and it's why Christians are so unlike Christ; they ignore most of his words or dismiss them as parables where convenient.
He done fucked up. He was under the delusion he was coming back, and he didn't. He didn't even rise from the dead in the original account, we just have some suspicious guy hanging around his tomb, telling a story within a story about what had happened.
As usual, it matters more what people have been indoctrinated to believe rather than if it has any evidence (if you even count the bible as evidence in the first place). Everyone will then just make up excuses why the text doesn't back up their beliefs.

The Second Coming happens quite a bit, as long as I have a sandwich or a glass of juice after the first one.

They were no different than any other doomsday cult except in staying power.

For me, it occurs after a meal at McDonald's, but, getting back to the regularly scheduled programming...
My "experience" that I mentioned in my OP occurred around the age of 12 or 13; I remember sitting in church reading my Bible, and, "Viola!" I went up to my pastor a short time later and asked him about it and he just stared at me, putting his hands up, basically saying, "I don't have time for this or you..." I think that this was the beginning of my journey away from the Christian religion.

Or big-arse Roman swords, as they're known.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

I had kinda the same thing. As best as I can remember it went "I don't have an answer or response, you just have to believe." Exit, stage right.
