I never say "please" when I'm ordering something. You're asking for my fucking order, and I'm fucking giving it to you. I never say "Thank you" either. I might say "Have a nice day", as long as they didn't have a fucking attitude problem.
That coffee would have to be fucking amazing for me to continue going there if I ever went there in the first place. And as a new customer, I'd avoid it.

Is that really the message you'd want kids to absorb -- being polite can get you a discount on a fucking cup of coffee?
How about, 'Be polite because it's the right thing to do, even if there's nothing in it for you'? As I recall, the Golden Rule didn't come with self-serving caveats.
I've not read the Heinlein book, so perhaps I'm misconstruing your remark. If so, I apologize.
You did.

That's all way too involved. Everyone whose made coffee for a living knows that one of those caraffes wasn;t properly rinsed, and at any moment you can feed a shitty customer glass cleaner with absolutely plausible deniability.

I don't say please unless I'm asking for a favour. I always say thank you though. I don't see how not saying please is being rude or impolite at all. That sign telling people to say please is pretty rude and impolite, however, and if I drank coffee, I probably wouldn't go there and certainly wouldn't appreciate being forced to say please.

How generous of you!
Being courteous costs me 0.0 cents. Just because someone's taking your fucking order is no reason to fucking give it to them without the courtesy you (presumably, though I now have my doubts) would give to others.

Lol, you're not a people person, are you.

Could take the Wolf approach "pretty please, with sugar on top, give me a fucking coffee"

That's just it, ain't it? It costs nothing to be 'courteous'. People do it either because they were fuckin' raised to do it, or because it makes them feel better (despite doing jack shit for the person behind the counter). If you really want to thank someone, leave some money in the tip jar. A 'thank you' sure as shit ain't going to help them make their rent or pay their bills.
