Sitting on billions, Catholic dioceses amassed taxpayer aid

When the coronavirus forced churches to close their doors and give up Sunday collections, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte turned to the federal government’s signature small business relief program for more than $8 million.

The diocese’s headquarters, churches and schools landed the help even though they had roughly $100 million of their own cash and short-term investments available last spring, financial records show. When the cash catastrophe church leaders feared didn’t materialize, those assets topped $110 million by the summer.

As the pandemic began to unfold, scores of Catholic dioceses across the U.S. received aid through the Paycheck Protection Program while sitting on well over $10 billion in cash, short-term investments or other available funds, an Associated Press investigation has found. And despite the broad economic downturn, these assets have grown in many dioceses.

Overall, the nation’s nearly 200 dioceses, where bishops and cardinals govern, and other Catholic institutions received at least $3 billion. That makes the Roman Catholic Church perhaps the biggest beneficiary of the paycheck program, according to AP’s analysis of data the U.S. Small Business Administration released following a public-records lawsuit by news organizations. The agency for months had shared only partial information, making a more precise analysis impossible.

Church officials have said their employees were as worthy of help as workers at Main Street businesses, and that without it they would have had to slash jobs and curtail their charitable mission as demand for food pantries and social services spiked. 

But new financial statements several dozen dioceses have posted for 2020 show that their available resources remained robust or improved during the pandemic’s hard, early months. The pattern held whether a diocese was big or small, urban or rural, East or West, North or South.

"Is your god so weak he needs human voices for its communique? If your god doesn't like the way I live, let it tell me, not you" is the usual way I go about answering if I believe in their particular god image narrative.

Kids expelled from Catholic school over mom selling adult photos

A California mom and her husband say it’s not fair their three boys were kicked out of a Catholic elementary school because the mom sells access to sexy photos and videos of herself online.

Crystal Jackson, known as “Mrs. Poindexter” online, started an OnlyFans account for her “hot mom” persona and was shocked by how quickly it grew. She posts photos and videos of herself mostly doing “normal mom stuff” around the house while posing in lingerie. Some of the content contains nudity.

But the mother says last summer, a group of moms from her kids’ Catholic school, Sacred Heart Parish in Sacramento, California, started a crusade to get her three boys under the age of 12 kicked out. At one point, anonymous envelopes of Crystal Jackson’s photos were sent to the school.

Two weeks ago, Crystal Jackson was removed as the second-grade “room mom,” and on Sunday, the Jacksons got an email from the school principal saying they must find another school for their kids immediately.

“Your apparent quest for high profile controversy in support of your adult website is in direct conflict with what we hope to impart onto our students," the email said.

Pope Francis says violence and extremism are “betrayals of religion” and that hatred of others is the “greatest blasphemy.” Um, ok I guess, but has he ever heard of Thomas Aquinas and Augustine? Or Catherine Emmerich who he is supposed to canonize, or Christianity in general like when popes organized Crusades? Or maybe he is ready to denounce those popes who warmongered people into going Crusading?
