I had breaks from academics in school, and I turned out fine.

Stuffy Christians. It wasn't inclusive to all students...and their beliefs. There was also some concern about child snatching on satans night. By witches, most like.

Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

As for the OP, I'm fully on board with schools not having Halloween or other holiday events during school hours. Sorry, people, I want my kid in school focusing on academics! The school year and school days are short enough as it is...she doesn't need to be messing around with social events instead of studying.

Most schools here have fall festivals right before Halloween - after school hours. Kids and their families can go if they choose (we do) and parade around in costumes, play games and eat candy. School hours need to be for reading, writing and 'rithemetic.

I think the social aspect of school is just as important in preparing a child for the world. Special events such as Halloween parades, pep rallies, etc, during school hours do not only that, but they also provide a little bit of a break, stress relief, and morale boost. Which is also important to performing well in school, imho.

I could not agree more.  My primary objection to home schooling is that it is a blatant attempt by idiot parents to prevent their children from learning anything about the world they live in.

Not a huge fan of home schooling either. It could work out well though, so long as the kids are heavily involved in afternoon social activities/sports after the home school class session. Every day. But I feel that often isn't the case...

Home schooling ultimately comes down to being an attempt by parents to retain total control over their children.  It is doomed to failure either because the kids will rebel against it or because they won't and will become neurotic little shits who are afraid of their own shadows.

I gotta agree that I think non academic activities are highly important, unless what you want to teach your kid is to hate school. Some kids, Hermione-esc, do wonderfully on academics alone, but most need some social breaks. Arent there even studies showing how breaks, for kids and adults, increase productivity?

Anyway, my kids old school also canceled Halloween activities during school hours, the reason given when I asked for details was that not everyone celebrates it and also that it often leaves out the poorer kids, whos parents dont have time or money to make costumes.

P,s, I also went as a hobo one year around age 8. This would've been in the mid 80s. My kid can go as what she likes, everything will offend someone, no point worrying unless its obviously a negative stereotype.

No costumes for us this year. You have no idea how hard it is for me. I put sooo much effort into my families costumes. My husband has a lined English duster i sewed for either western or steampunk themes. He actually made it work as Papa Legba one year. His backup costume is a Howie Lab coat i designed with no pattern, for Dr. Horrible or other mad scientists look. Ive got so many more, too. Hmmm. We need a Halloween costumes past and present thread!
