That's not arrogance. It's an acknowledgement of how vast the subject matter is. Why don't you actually GO to the wikipedia entry on philosophy and see what's there? Instead of getting mad at me for suggesting something so beneath you, realize it includes a massive bibliography as well as some links to free university sites with really good information.

As for the three years-- come back in 2020, and tell me again that was an arrogant thing to say. . .

I highly recommend the book The Story of Philosophy by Bryan Magee, if you want an introduction to the fundamentals of philosophy and philosophers.

The Story Of Philosophy Bryan Magee

And then there's always Bertrand Russell's History Of Western Philosophy, which is eminently readable.

Wow I had no idea you had made this post. I've moved on a lot since then, but that was the first I ever read on philosophy and as an introductory book there's an awful lot in it (for an introductory book).

Three years from now, come back with more questions. Smile

Wikipedia has concentrated information

Well The Story of Philosophy would be perfect for you if you're looking for broadness.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

To say to a person that you don't know that it will need an amount of time to do something is arrogance , no matter who the person is and because I didn't asked  how much it will take me so telling me that it will take me X time it is you not believing that someone can do it faster than you , arrogance.

I'd say 3 years is very modest for the average person or even an intelligent person. So to say a mere 3 years to a stranger is actually a compliment and the opposite of arrogance. I'd say that your insistence that it is arrogance comes across as lot more arrogant, ironically.

Yeah I see how I could look arrogant, I'm not stating that I'm capable to do it in less than 3 but to say that to a person is at least a bold move or maybe I jumped to conclusions to fast.

We could spend our entire lives studying philosophy and still not have studied more than a fraction of it.  It is, after all, the life's work of many people over thousands of years, and it's still ongoing.

Try a lifetime for anyone who studies it and they never find all the answers.

Coming back before a good few years of studying philosophy would be premature for anyone really. Although most people would indeed come back early because they'd be excited to talk about everything they'd learned before they go and change their mind later.

Hell, why not just stay and talk about what you're studying?

Talking is good for processing information , it puts thoughts in order. I usually talk with my friend about the things I read , helps a lot
