I agree. Plastic bags aren't greener than paper bags in and of themselves. Don't even get me started on reusable "canvass" bags. The whole thing has been subverted....and it pisses me off.

I did. It was a huge project for a client collecting information on the Pacific Garbage Patch. To be fair, my research was relegated to ocean pollution, but I think it gives us a clear picture that single-use plastic is very bad.

Agreed. We need to stop that shit. Plastics are baller...but we need to stop being dicks about them. Responsible use (and refuse) is an unqualified good. We're just not doing that....and because they're so conveniet...we're really not being very responsible with alternatives, either.

I think the best solution is only to have recyclable plastic that is marketed as reusable (such as plastic dishwasher safe cups) in the market. Shit like plastic coffee cups at donut shops and plastic grocery bags need to go.

Austin Texas has a ban on plastic bags while all the surrounding area doesn't (remember we are the hippy blue in a state of red) and at first everyone was pissed. Recently a news page asked if we wanted it reversed and go back to plastic. The overwhelming vote was no, we got used to bringing our canvas bags and prefer them. They are sturdier, bigger, and easier to carry. You still have the option to get your meat in a plastic bag so you still always have a few bags which is nice for trash liners and picking up dog/cat poop without being swamped in them.
As for paper... Honestly even outside of Austin I haven't seen a paper bag in a decade. I didn't even know they were still a thing.

We have the usual water thinguies at my workplace. I reuse my plastic cup for a least a day. I keep it in my hiding place and refill it as needed. Damn water. Doc says I have an Iron health and that stuff will rust me.

Also toward the end of my first marriage I realized I didn't like my husband anymore because of bags. We were stationed in Wichita Falls and it was long before there were bans on plastic but I thought the idea of a reusable canvas was awesome so I insisted on using them. In Wal-Mart one day the cashier is complaining about my bags saying they are cumbersome and she didn't think they were a good idea she wished people didn't use them. Instead of letting it just go, letting me reply, or defending me my dick of a husband agrees with her and they both proceed to trash talk canvas bags and the tree huggers that use them aka me standing right there. And yet when I left his ass not even five months later he was surprised.
I got so good at recycling that a box of 86 trash bags lasted me nearly four years in my home town. My ex hated my recycling craze. Now in an apartment it's a bit harder to recycle but I recycle what I can. My husband now didn't care about recycling but he knew I did so like a real supporting husband he started to. Now he does it just because.

Honestly, I use plastic bags too. I most often reuse them for trash bags, but I'm no saint. I try to do better, though.
As for exes being assholes in obvious ways, I hear ya. My ex husband was an utter cunt so many times the stories would fill a book that I'll never write because it's embarrassing how long I stayed with him.
