Really?

I have no problem making fun of aids or cancer if it's done in a not-offensive way. It's not the topic, but what you say about it and the meaning in your discussion, that is important. It's not about how bad the disorder is, either. Like, I'll make jokes about death, and that's about as bad as it gets. What matters is the actual meaning and message of the joke, not the topic.

For example, I mentioned that Ricky Gervais does this brilliantly. This is a hilarious clip of him joking about teenagers with cancer.

It's not that cancer is a funny topic, it's that the meaning of his joke is the exact opposite of actually insulting children with cancer. People don't walk away from this thinking "yeah, kids with cancer are such dishonest and greedy people". They think the exact opposite; the joke actually increases empathy towards them. That's what makes comedy so clever. It's the inherent irony of appropriate and thoughtful humor that differentiates it from ridicule.

Shadow, what you say is true. Everything has it's appropriate place. But to constantly mention doctors with me and my illness, it's just to belittle me and mock me for my affliction, and that's not alright.

MK, I suffer from depression.

For me a sense of humour is a way for me to deal with some of the things I have encountered in daily life.

Remember that people make jokes about things without really targeting a person, or group. My reaction to jokes depends if someone's just doing it for humour or being malicious.

I joke about killing and serial killing all the time. That doesn't mean I'm serious or targeting anyone anyone speciific maliciously. I honestly done know if anyone here knows someone who has been murdered (I do).

Just be careful about over reacting to PERCEIVED slights

I joke and hear jokes about it compassionately all the time, and you are right those are a different category, but I can tell, when it's done with malice.

Well fuck, now I'm depressed. See what you did? Wait, didn't do. Wait............
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

OP, don't you realize that creating this thread was the best way to get people to make mental health jokes?

PS: Don't bother replying. I almost forgot that I've probably been added to your Ignore list.

Well, remember, that's probably the best you'll get. You never really recover from mental illness. You may take medication for it and go back to the way you were before it hit you, but you stop taking your meds at your own peril. I stopped taking my antidepressants after I reached the "can't fucking stand" stage with my Viibryd/Abilify regimen, but I fell into a deeper depression, and eventually found something that worked for me before it was too late.
