Your brain must have fallen out of your ears. "If it wasn't true the media wouldn't say it?" You're nuts man. You need to go back to logic 101.

I said that when the media (and we are talking reputable sources as well) keep reporting it, and governments keep reporting it, such that it becomes common knowledge, it is a very good sign that it actually happens. You've accused a well-respected member of lying, and you have no evidence to back anything you've said up. Us? We have plenty of news stories. The Daily Mail likes to report them on a seemingly daily basis. (December 5, 2010 at 9:25 pm)Mishka Wrote:(December 5, 2010 at 9:19 pm)lrh9 Wrote: Your brain must have fallen out of your ears. I made my point, and it is valid. Appeal to authority is a logical fallacy. In this instance the only valid data is unbiased collected statistics, and sound statistical analysis. Anecdotes and personal opinions should have no bearing on the factual description of any system.
Could we please return to the topic on taxes and extending unemployment benefits?
There are those who believe, as I once did, that cutting taxes for the wealthier parts of society spur economic development and the creation of jobs. America, for the last 30 years, has effectively been conducting an experiment on whether or not this new direction pioneered by Reagan actually works. During the Clinton years, 22.7 million jobs were created. He raised taxes on the top 2%, a move Republicans predicted would bring recession. During the Bush II years, 3 million jobs were created. The Wall Street Journal, hardly a left wing source, declared it was the "worst track record". Empirical evidence indicates that cutting taxes for the wealthy does little or nothing to spur growth. By contrast, the opinion that extending unemployment benefits is a sound way to support or boost the economy is shared by many top economists: Letter to the President and Congress from the Economic Policy Institute Extending unemployment benefits is compassionate, effective and relatively cheap in comparison to the Bush tax cuts.

Your so called "news reports" which are more often than not exaggerations or flat out lies bloated with the opinions of anti-welfare demagogues probably number less than a percent of all cases. I can stick to the statistics. Why can't you? It is not my burden to disprove your case, it is your burden to prove yours. Do the right thing. Present a fair, complete statistical description and drop the unreliable anecdotes and biased opinions. If you can't make your case without stacking the deck you shouldn't be allowed to argue at all. DeistPaladin, you are exactly right. I've read that Democrats are considering a deal to extend the Bush tax cuts if the Republicans will extend unemployment benefits. Spending without revenue is unsound fiscal policy, but I can guarantee that Democrats will cave. Republicans can outlast us because they don't need tax cuts, but we do need unemployment benefits. I can also guarantee that Republicans are not going to accept any responsibility for the resulting debt and are going to blame Democrats. |
