The pedo priests should be charged and tried. The leaders who covered it up should be charged with conspiracy or the like and tried. If statutes of limitation are a problem, those should be changed with retroactive effect.
Going forward, the church should wake up and allow priests to marry. Peter was married.
And the Catholic laity should be up in arms about this. I'm not hearing much from them.

The history of how celibacy became a thing for priests is amusing..and sure it's silly and pointless now...but I don't see how it would address their current crisis.
Is being married supposed to be a talisman against molesting children?

I just heard on CNN that the church released a statement saying now is not the time for legislation.

The majority of states have NOT convened grand juries on this outrage yet.
We are nowhere near seeing the bottom of this fucking Catholic mess.
Disgusting to contemplate, but 10s of thousands of victims is a real possibility.
Where does the populace draw the line and resort to (literally) pitch forks and torches to erase this problem ??

The more I wonder about it, I wonder now if we stopped going to church when I was younger because my family was concerned of the abuse me and my sister might endure in the Catholic church. I personally never experienced it, but to this day I wonder why we stopped going.

The Illinois ACLU was certainly aware (I wasn't the only one bringing it up) of pedo priests in the late 80s. A concern then and now was the Catholic church essentially running (evilly as it turns out) their own separate and secret criminal justice system with no oversight at all from the authorities.

Unfortunately...if we did what we should do..they would scream religious persecution and witch hunt (I'd pay money to see that, especially the latter part..just for the lelz value) and tie the thing up in court.
