I am the eldest of 4. I was 13 when by baby sister was born.I got to change a LOT of nappies (diapers)All I can say is that I was most grateful that we never had pumpkin soup in that couple of years.

A good friend once told me, with incredulity, of a major discovery he had made: People are really not at all interested in other peoples' children.

That was such a relief , because  I've never liked children. As infants there is" a load noise at one end, and a complete  lack of responsibility at the other" (Ronald Knox)

Once they stop projectile vomiting and learn to control their bowels, they become  boring little psychos** until about age 12, when they become capable of  abstract though.

OF COURSE, I never had children. There is no doubt in my mind that MY offspring would be so close to perfect it wouldn't matter.   Great

I have found that people don't like it much when you say you don't much care for children.

But I totally get it.  Babies...no thanks.  Toddlers...extra no thanks as they are mobile.  At about 10 I can become interested if the kid has some signs of intelligence, a sense of humor, and a personality.

Yeah, yeah...I had three kids and that's a big part of how I know that I don't like the company of young children.

Of course I'm joking. Rolleyes Eating human babies is a standing joke with atheists, as an unbelievable number of religious think that we do. As far as babies go, I did a lot of jobs for money as a teenager. Mowing lawns, pulling weeds, etc., even did baby-sitting. Crazily enough, males in the Fireball household were restricted to outside chores, and were not allowed to do inside chores like helping with meal preparation and cleanup. What I could do when my dad was at work was beyond his purview- to wit- babysitting, including changing diapers! Not an enjoyable task, but I was thoroughly prepared for it when my children came along.

I'll agree with you that the older children get, the less of a pain in the ass they become. I prefer to associate with adults, but I made it through my spawn's childhood, as they survived theirs.

I get away with saying a lot more outrageous things these days because I'm old.

I once had the bewildering experience of watching a very bright young woman drop about 20 I Q points after the birth of her first child. She seemed to devolve as she went into 'baby brain ' mode. I'm sure it's a hard wired thing, to ensure the survival of the child.  Very disconcerting the first time I saw it. I thought poor girl was having a psychotic episode. Perfectly understandable in the circumstances

--and you've had three? Good for you--all bullshit aside, I consider not having had children is very much a 'mixed blessing.' (if you'll forgive the expression) .  I'm aware I have probably missed a lot of great stuff.

I am certainly not young and am therefore allowed some leeway on things I say.

I have seen the dreaded baby IQ drop in action...every baby isn't beautiful/handsome/cute, every baby isn't a genius, every baby isn't super talented...but you are right...it's probably a survival of the species thing that is necessary.

Yeah...I had three...all grown now with either kids or stepkids of their own.  There are still times when I wonder if I can change my mind and decide I don't want to have kids.  I suppose that ship has sailed.  If only I knew then what I know now....

I liked kids alot more before I had any.  Holy shit...if a person ever wonders wtf is wrong with us, globally..just go watch kids at a park. That said, all of mine are beautiful/handsome/cute/talented, despite their shit pedigree.

MoMo asked me why she was "so awesome" today...I stoneface told her "hybrid vigor, troll".
