I never ceased to be amazed at the extreme, aggressive emotions and what I see as the paranoia of gun lovers.
I think it was Gae who said recently something like "never ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity and incompetence" That's my attitude towards politicians as a species. This attitude is based on 25 years as a party member and unionist . I also watch parliament from time-to-time; it is televised live here
I'm not paranoid about my government. Nor am I aware that the extreme attitude of some Americans to firearms is shared by any other democratic country.
In my opinion the extreme gun lover's attitude is an excellent example of Yonadav's "toxic cognition". That includes the claim that an urban citizen in a democratic country with rule of law has need for a firearm
The preceding is simply my opinion . I have no interest in an ongoing debate, I have no investment in trying to change anyone's mind..
None of my business what Americans do in their own country, and to be honest, I don't really care.
I think I'll continue to agree to differ.

Boru Quit trying to blow smoke up our asses.
Oz - you gotta prove you " need" a gun - and you have to have a license to buy one. You can' t own anything but bolt or lever acctuon - no semi- auto or full auto allowed.
You got gang raped and they told you it was a happy marriage.
Try again:

How the hell did this change to more gun talk???
I've got more guns and more access to really fun guns than I'd like to admit to.
That being said, if the US wants to toughen up gun laws (eliminate/limit certain types, background check, tests for ownership competency, limit capacity, regulate ammo purchase, registration, .............), bring it on, I'll comply. You know why? Cause I'll still be able to jump thru all those hoops and own a gun. It won't necessarily be as fun any more, but on occasion I'll still need at least a couple.

My thoughts exactly after my last post. I was thinking "Umm, what just happened there? This thread is about a move made by the Oz government". THEN the penny dropped; the trigger seems to have been 'government crackdown'
The paranoid reaction was quite Pavlovian; a conditioned response which seems to have occurred without first being filtered by the brain---of course that's just my perception, what do I know?

Someone started a gun thread. All gun threads must spill over into other threads. Especially threads about government restriction.

You're forgetting - a lion' s share of the reason the 68 gun bill got passed ( a ( D ) bill) - was the Black Panthers were getting guns --- and Southern ( D )s weren't going to allow THAT....
I'm unfamiliar with the NZ black panthers and their effect on popular reform in australia.

Yeah. Far more likely to have been the New Zealand KKK. Not sure.
Pretty sure the KKK here still has a member in Oz. In Queensland I think. At its peak I think it had up to six members.

Current social media platforms must die. And they will, once the Wild West era is over, once enough customers realize they're being exploited, and start demanding better services for which they will be willing to pay directly, or through taxes. In a decade or two, once Facebooks and Twitters f*ck off and die, the way messengers and Myspace did, and when large enough number of politicians are able to use the technology without the help of their grand-kids - we should see some changes.
Also - people, who think social media is "free speech" are sadly deluded. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter are owned by private companies and they can - and do - silence anyone they please. Not to mention - actively control algorithms that decide, whose speech is heard by whom. I can only shake my head, seeing how many people don't seem to have learned yet, that there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Yeah, and next thing you see is concentration camps, like in all those other countries where you cant buy guns in Wal Mart.

Yeah because everyone knows that not letting white nationalist terrorists buy high powered weapons and post their insane bullshit online to inspire copy cat killers leads to gulags
