I think that you'd find gun control advocates are very, very amenable to treating guns like cars.  Mandatory safety features and all.

Just had the neighbors kids shoot my double doors out with their bb guns today, obviously going to grow up to be responsible gun owners.  My favorite, though, was that the mother threatened to call the cops on me for taking the bb gun away from her delinquent son and bringing it to her.  Because, get this "he's 13 and you're a grown man".

Yeah, mull that over lady, your 13 year old was shooting at the glass in a house full of kids with one full grown and fully armed man in it.

Not quite......

If the Chevy owner wants to simply drive his vehicle on his own property - he doesn't even need a title.

And yeah - your neighbor is a cross-eyed drooler, for sure....

Hope you got a police report.......

Nah, I was half hoping she'd call em.  I'm not convinced that he was trying to take them out, poor fuckers blind as a bat.  I was only mildly irritated with him, but he cried like a baby when I took his toy away and told him what he'd done. It was his mom that threw me for a loop.

Not the reaction I was expecting to me being as chill as I could have been about the whole thing.

Sometimes the laws work against ya.

In this state - an airgun is NOT considered a firearm - so when some punk shoots out some windows with one - the best you can hope for is vandalizm.. Reckless use of a firearm bears more weight....

I wouldn't have called the cops on the kid, or expected them to haul his ass off...though it would have been funny to watch her explain to a sheriff why she was wasting his time by calling the cops on the people whose glass her son had busted. Kids lucky I'm not the kind of nut that would return fire.

You seen how big the bbs are getting? They come through like a .22. No clue who's bright idea that is.

Germany had fairly restrictive gun laws prior to the Nazis taking over. Licensing, registration, that kind of thing. Beginning in 1933, shortly after the National Socialists took over, The Gestapo forbad issuing new permits to Jews and revoked previously issued ones. German authorities then began raiding Jewish homes and confiscating their guns. Licensed gun owners with registered firearms were the first targeted in these raids.

Among others, Albert Einstein's summer home was raided although no guns were found there. This raid was the catalyst that led to Einstein renouncing his German citizenship. Later in 1933 Einstein would leave the mainland for England where he spent some time in an isolated cottage outside of London where Locker-Lampson and some associates stood armed guard in case the Germans should try to kill him.

In 1938 Germany passed some new gun laws. These made it easier for party members and members of many official Nazi organizations like the Hitler youth to obtain guns. Most non-party affiliated Germans were unaffected by the new laws, but they did make it illegal for gypsies, homosexuals and other groups of people deemed less than desirable to own them.

Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm pretty sure the Jews, gypsies, and homosexuals who had recently been disarmed and weren't lucky enough to get out of Europe were the people that later ended up in the gas chambers.

The idea that if only the holocaust victims were armed, that the holocaust would have been lessened in some manner is both offensive and ridiculous.  It's been long debunked by historians.

There's this magical idea that if only the jews had guns, they could've done what the Soviet army struggled to do, without the military training and tanks.   There were uprisings -- and they were largely failures.  Take for instance the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which was a massive failure.  Many of those who weren't disarmed and participated in the uprising died -- either in battle, or sent to death camps.  In extraordinarily high numbers, while the German Casualties were quite low.

To think that a group of untrained individuals with pistols could have stopped what the Soviet Army could not is quite ludicrous.

What is the significance of 30 days? How would this differ from the 4-5 day waiting period some have to wait already? Why not 90 days? or 180? Or 10? Where are you getting the number 30 from? Who would enforce this? Or would businesses be forced to delay sales for 30 days?

So, my cousin who's been jealous of me my entire life might be able to stop me from getting a gun? Or my coworker who resents me because I've been in the company half the time they have but make double the pay? Who would conduct these interviews and where would this funding come from? Can one person who says "He/she is unstable" stop someone from getting a gun?

What agency would manage these licenses? Who would enforce this? What would licensing gun holders accomplish?

Once again, who enforces this? Who pays for it?

Which infractions? Could getting a parking ticket disqualify someone from having a gun?

Gun show vendors still run background checks on you. The point is that people can meet other people at gun shows and buy guns "privately" from other individuals, not vendors. Even then, you're suggesting I cannot sell a gun to my brother or father?

My main point is, you guys say all of this stuff but I'm not very convinced you've thought much of it through.

1.  30 would allow more time for background checks.  It would reduce the number of purchasers who 'fall through the cracks' by allowing for more thorough investigations.  It would be enforced by whichever agencies enforce the current 2-7 day wait.  Yes, businesses could delay sales for 30 days.

2.  No, one disgruntled interviewee would not stop you from getting a gun, as a negative report would be further investigated.  The interviews would be conducted by local police.

3.  Licensing could be managed by any agency which already manages government-issued licenses (hunting, fishing, driving).  It would allow law enforcement to more easily identify suspects in a gun crime.

4.  The safety classes would be offered either by local law enforcement or by accredited private providers.  It would be paid for by the license holders.

5.  Into general revenue.  If you prefer, it could be tagged specifically to help meet the operating costs of the issuing agencies.

6.  Fair point, I should have been clearer.  Infractions would need to be gun-related in order to affect your licensing privileges - having an unsecured firearm, transporting a loaded firearm, failure to meet ongoing safety requirements, shooting the bloke who cut you off in traffic, that sort of thing.

7.  Of course you can sell a gun to your brother or you father.  You could even sell one to your old granny.  It would just take a little longer.

Quote:My main point is, you guys say all of this stuff but I'm not very convinced you've thought much of it through.

With a few exceptions, the above are largely the state of gun control measures where I live. A few (such as recertification every two years) are  things I think would be an improvement.  I also left out a few which I think are needlessly intrusive.

So yes, it has been thought through.  And it works.  Based on population, New Zealand has a quarter as many privately owned firearms as the US, and a twelfth as many firearm-related deaths (barring the recent massacre).

The Nazis would have been thrilled to have a few incidents of armed resistance by the Jews. Individuals open fire to temporarily stop their arrest. Hitler goes apeshit in front of a large crowd. The Geheime Staatspolizei get back up from the Wehrmacht. Things then proceed as they did in our time line.

He's just pointing up that guns are in the hands of criminals and there's nothing we should do about that.
