Three people have been killed and 15 injured after a gunman attacked a food festival in California.
The gunman was shot dead by police shortly after he began firing, although police are investigating reports that a second suspect may still be at large.
The Gilroy Garlic Festival was about to end for the weekend on Sunday evening, when shots were fired at the site.

But.... I thought guns kept you safe?

Recorded as the 246th mass shooting in the States this year.

But no, there’s not a problem.

No problem at all.  In fact, we're a bit ahead of our goal of one mass shooting per day, this year.

Just think, if all those good guys with guns loaded up with silver bullets, they could eliminate the vampire and werewolf threat at the same time!

Yay for the 2A!

You did notice ?- the guys who took out the bad guy ( who had a semi auto AK variant) took him out with pistols.

They obviously spent time on the range. A uniform means dick to the ability to wield a handgun efficiently. Practice means far more. I know plenty of civilians who can outshoot cops. I know I can. I do regularly. Most cops dont shoot much past qualifying.

So yeah - good guys with handguns took out the bad guy with an " assault rifle".

Pity he was able to have an assault rifle in the first place

It' s probably a good thing he did.

Why?

Because he was an idiot that thought spray and pray works.

He shot over 60 rounds and killed 3.

Had he been using a handgun and AIMED it could have been far worse.

You're talking to a series of poorly constructed walls, ob. Carry on if you'd like, though.

Well, in that case....

How is this not an argument in favour of regulating both handguns and assault rifles?

They’re already regulated. Not very well, but meh. His purchase was legal.

Both of the firearms in question, btw, are semi autos. There was no assault rifle in this equation. One set of regs could conceivably apply to both, whereas assault rifle regs would apply to neither, and “assault-style” regs would not apply to the hand gun, though they’re equally lethal for the exact same reason in these scenarios.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

This probably confuses some people.

You are using terminology as technically correct as possible - and that probably doesn't sit well with those folks that think "scary black rifle" = assault rifle.

If firearms are made illegal for the general public it would be much harder for this kind of thing to happen. As it is, every few weeks some nutter goes to a public place and kills innocent people. I know there is an argument that they could get a weapon illegally, but why make it easy for them?
Exceptions can be made for people who need guns, like farmers or those living in areas where dangerous animals are common but there should be strict controls in place.
I can think of no reason why any normal sane person would want or need to own a gun
