If firearms are made illegal for the general public it would be much harder for this kind of thing to happen. As it is, every few weeks some nutter goes to a public place and kills innocent people. I know there is an argument that they could get a weapon illegally, but why make it easy for them?
Exceptions can be made for people who need guns, like farmers or those living in areas where dangerous animals are common but there should be strict controls in place.
I can think of no reason why any normal sane person would want or need to own a gun

There are those of us who enjoy the challenge of shooting marksmanship. I have a .22 caliber rifle that I use to shoot paper targets. That is all I've ever "killed" with it. I go to a shooting range that has diligent range safety officers, so that the people who do stupid shit on the firing line are immediately chastised or ejected. Now, you know of one normal, sane person with a gun.

Ever shot a gun? It’s super fun. Especially if you get into a cash tournament or hunting with buds. Those are normal, sane reasons for wanting to own a gun.

It’s stuff like this that keeps fueling gun nut opposition to common sense regs and enforcement.

I can' t imagine why anyone would imbibe tobacco.

Almost 10 times as many people in the US die of tobacco related disease as die of gunshot ( including suicides).

Joking aside, it’s a serious issue that deserves serious consideration that it just doesn’t get, because the two factions in this death match are so wedded to their talking points that they don’t see how neither set serves even their own interests.

The gun nuts are going to get some guns banned. The anti gun nuts are going to ban the wrong guns. It happened before, apparently we want to try again.

It isn't pro gun vs anti gun. It is pro greed. Firearm factories are as beholden to their CEOs and Shareholders as Oreo Cookies and Pizza Hut Pizza. 

The firearm corporations have not had to face what big oil did in taking lead out of gas, and still do not want to face they need to stop burning it at all. The auto industry flipped out when Nadar told them their products sucked. The auto industry took that as "ban all cars" which was bullshit. The auto industry did not die because Nader told them their products sucked. The auto industry went on to add safety belts, air bags and crumple zones. The one thing they have yet to do, which they have not, but need to do is move transportation away from burning fossil fuels.

I don't call gun nuts "gun nuts". I do call far too many individuals "gun worshipers". If a product to you is more important than reducing violence then you ARE part of the problem.

The gun nutters aren’t pulling reactionary nonsense to anti gun nuts nonsense, that never happened before, and the anti gun folks never banned the wrong guns to no avail....and they’re certainly not talking about doing the same thing again by explicit reference to that last ban...that never happened.

That's pretty much all that goes on with the bans. Both my elder sons are also "gun nuts".    I can go get the rules of law that make a particular firearm unlawful as an "assault weapon" in the state of California, but I'm sure that I'd be told I was wrong. There's some crazy Byzantine shit here in California that defies any kind of logic...and doesn't make anyone any safer.
