Who is a real Christian?

Well, I just have "faith" that you do.

Ebionites believed Jesus of Nazareth as a mere man who, by virtue of his righteousness, was chosen by God to be the Prophet of the Messianic Age, while they rejected as heresies the proto-orthodox Christian beliefs in his alleged divinity, pre-existence, virgin birth and substitutionary atonement. Some modern scholars argue that Ebionites may have been the most faithful disciples of the life and teachings of the historical Jesus. Christadelphians today claim to base their beliefs solely on the Bible, they reject the Trinity and the immortality of the soul, believing these to be corruptions of original Christian teaching. They believe Jesus is the Son of God, this is only a relational title toward the Father who alone is truly God. Christ's personhood, therefore, is human not divine, (believing this to be necessary in order to save humans from their sins).
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
I'm a real bad christian.
My wife's a real cafeteria christian. My ex is a real hypocritical christian.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.
As a former Pentecostal I can attest that Catholics are not only widely believed to not be Christians because of their veneration of Mary and the Saints (sounds like a pop group but Pentecostals consider it idolatry), but widely believe the Catholic Church is the 'whore of Babylon' described in Revelation, who sits on seven mountains (ouch!). The whore probably represented Rome in the time Revelation was written, which they interpret as the Vatican.
It has been my unfortunate experience to hear the most awful slander regarding priests and nuns. You'd think the real scandals would be shocking enough, but Pentecostals circulate what amounts to conspiracy theories and urban legends about the RCC, like there being a convent in Mexico where the priests repeatedly get the nuns pregnant, bury the babies in the basement, and if any of the nuns try to escape they're thrown into a giant grinder. But I shouldn't let myself get started....
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

Stories like that are representations of animus - the people who tell them probably wouldn't put their hand on a bible and swear to their truth - but they're useful in conveying an experienced reaction to catholicism on the part of protestants here there and errywhere.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
To the OP, all of these are simultaneously true:
That voting block is held together with duct tape and baling wire for the purposes of unifying against anyone who is not religious. Us nons are even LESS unified because what would we unify with? I've seen people argue the "really important differences" between the gradients of atheism including Deism. IE christ decides on that last day. when he does we are not saved by denomination or even theology. we either acept Christ here and now and we will be saved or we do not and will be judged and cast out. that i why you can't find a denominational 'in.' there isn't one. the bible only talks about the church which is decided by christ and not labels we put on ourself. jew christian deist perhaps even muslim it all depends on christ the gospel and what we did with what we knew/understoof of it. They're taking the square root of larger and larger negative numbers. I guess it's just complex like that. |
