Pretty much every Republican I have known for the last 20 years doesn't recognize any form of centrism at all.  If you aren't with them, you're so far left you're about to fall off the planet.  And during that time the GOP has purged itself of anyone resembling centrists or compromisers.

Well, OLB, given his previous comments in thread, it seems like whatever number of republicans he knows really soured over the last 20 years. We may never know what happened to do that to them.

He gave a phone interview to local news yesterday.  Asked if he was scared of being arrested, he said he was not scared, which prolly sounded like "ain't skeert" but added he expected to hear from the authorities.  He said he walked up the Capitol steps to see what was going and got pushed inside by the crowd.  Once inside, he was "just looking for a bathroom."

Of course, a lot of that speculation is likely based on times in other nations (Revolutionary France, Soviet Russia, Communist China, post colonial Algeria) where far leftists did achieve power. However, the more I look at it, the more I realize that America’s political system skews so far to the right (as opposed to, for instance, Western Europe) that what many see as far-left isn’t really all that far to the left. If Bernie and AOC were based out of, say, the UK, they’d probably not be too out of place in the Labour Party (especially since the neoliberal New Labour is dead and buried.) I think we’d have to wait until the more jackasstic Tumblr “SJW”-types or even Tankies to become mainstream before those fears become justifiable beyond “um, guys, I think you might be going a bit overboard.”

This is the kind of stupid thing that I have tried and failed to explain to cons.  You look at the way the UK, Germany, France...etc, most of Western Europe is run, far to the left of the US but not even close to true Socialism or Communism.  I have at least heard some cons say "we don't want to be like Europe", at least that's closer to honest.  But then you look at Norway; hell I'd move there in a heartbeat if it was possible.

Yeah, conservatism isn’t really all that well-equipped to deal with fascism. In practice, fascist beliefs tend to be roided-up versions of what they already believe, and they tend to not notice anything’s wrong until it’s too late.
