There’s a connection between volume of sale and gun violence, but it’s delayed and tertiary. More guns does mean that in 4 to 7 years time, especially if there are even more new models at that time, the secondary market is flooded and gun crime has a relatively cheap buy in. Thing is, there always has been and always will be some portion of used firearms available at a decent price from unscrupulous but otherwise legal primary buyers.
Monitoring or capping sales -could- have an effect, but the effect would be small, and at great economic and political cost. Gun manufacturers and gun lobbies frankly wouldn’t even care if we limited volume domestically so long as we removed those pesky international sales guardrails and limits ( that ironically do exist…in context). *
It’s a finishing touch, at best, and something worth sinking our time into if and when we’ve shored up more direct and efficacious plans.
*and just to drive this home, manufacturing lobbies have been consistently -for- gun safety laws and stronger enforcement,…domestically. The culture war giving them cover to work toward the real prize, our genuine distinction in the world of guns. Unlimited international arms sales.

I’d say gun politics. Our gun culture is the reason that we’re not in an actual war zone despite more guns than most warzones.
I get that to a person looking outside in that our gun politics seems like our gun culture- but I’m talking more about how those of us from gun families are taught to handle and conceive of guns.
If you keep a chainsaw in a case but your ar loaded on the living room shelf, American gun culture failed to install its values in you.
I worry more about some kid in a city apartment buying a desert eagle than a redneck getting another rifle, personally- because culture.
- and yes, yes , I know that the people with shit gun politics seem to be well represented by the cohort you can expect to have come from gun culture.. but that just makes it worse, IMO.

I don’t care if u personally have 5 or 500 firearms, as long as u r a responsible gun owner. I do care if u r irresponsible and one of ur guns ends up in the hands of a school shooter or used in a homicide. I agree with GN that it’s more about the politics, less about availability ( even though it does play a small part). So I guess I’m an advocate for a nationwide DB of guns and their owners and seizure of any non-trackable and illegal guns as a start. Followed by stricter punishment for bad actors. Not that I think any of that would fly

It’s funny that it won’t fly, at least to me, since it wouldnt get in the way of my purchasing and owning a closet full of guns that spans 7 decades.

And what is " non trackable"? How can the ability to " track" guns reduce firearm violence?

It be great if a politician came out and said “ yup, we are coming to get your guns, if you can’t handle legally owning them”
So if ur gun was stolen and u filed a police report and it’s used in a crime u r covered during the investigation. If u failed to report then your @ I can own guns responsibility” car and all ur guns are pulled

If a cop has a gun that was used by someone in a crime - you know who had it when the crime was committed - and you know who manufactured it - WITHOUT serial numbers.
Where it was between the time of it' s original sale and it' s illegal use is superfluous. If the gun is over 20nyears old ( the vast majority are) it is impossible to even know who it was originally sold to.
