Russia and Ukraine

Quote:Senate Republicans are vowing to block any effort by President Trump to seize Greenland by military force, as Trump officials on Wednesday refused to back off their demands to control the island during a meeting with top diplomats at the White House.

Republican senators are flummoxed by Trump’s insistence that he’s willing to use military force to seize control of Greenland from Denmark, something they fear will destroy the NATO alliance and give Russia a bigger advantage in its war against Ukraine.

Two Republican senators — Sens. Thom Tillis (N.C.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) — plan to travel to Copenhagen on Friday to assure the Danish prime minister that there would be strong Republican opposition to any effort by Trump to use military force to seize Greenland.

“I’m going to remind them that we have coequal branches of government and I believe that there [is a] sufficient number of members, whether they speak up or not, that are concerned with this,” Tillis said of Trump’s threats.

“The actual execution of anything that would involve a taking of a sovereign territory that is part of a sovereign nation, I think would be met with pretty substantial opposition in Congress,” he said.

Of course, NATO's survival was not on the line with Venezuela. I think that will change the math on Capitol Hill.

If the point of all your silly shit, Bel, is that Russia does the sort of shit that the us does….and the sort of shit the us does is bad and we should stop that….then this means that what Russia does is what, and what Russia should do is what?

If the rule is we have to limit our attention to the country that is waging war on Ukraine, then, yes, I am off topic.

If we're allowed to talk about the country that is waging proxy war against Russia, then talking about the US is relevant.

Anyway, what I wanted to achieve was to get away from simplistic, Good vs. Evil, James Bond movie-type political views, and think about the background of these long-running conflicts.

Also I reject the idea that I have been "defending" Russia. I have been trying, through looking at many different sources, to get an accurate picture of what is going on.

What’s interesting is that one of the excuses (and it WAS an excuse, not an explanation) Putin used for the invasion was that if Ukraine joined NATO, it would place the alliance’s forces on Russia’s border.

Since you’re so fond of whataboutism, how do you think NATO should respond to Russian forces on its borders?

... by justifying their Ukrainian aggression, using their own propaganda themes and tropes, and refusing to criticize their atrocities beyond the rare passing mention.

You're a lot more transparent than you think you are.

There is no such thing as proxy war on russia, only russia imperialist war against Ukraine.

You can't run from "simplistic" good vs evil view when country that invaded Ukraine is almost cartoonishly evil.

Your rejection means shit when in the same post that you deny defending russia you're spewing crap about "proxy war" on it.

You mean the one and only relevant topic.

No country is waging a proxy war; this conflict is solely between Ukraine and Russia, and no one else.

Quote:Anyway, what I wanted to achieve was to get away from simplistic, Good vs. Evil, James Bond movie-type political views, and think about the background of these long-running conflicts.
Nope, there’s a clear good and evil here. Russia is an aggressive force that launched a totally illegal and unjustified invasion, while NATO has tried to stop them by helping Ukraine defend itself. That’s what happened.
