Yeah, well, Walmart's a special case. I don't go there 'cause it scares me. The idea that some of those people are armed makes me queasy.

Maybe it’s my background, having lived in two countries with fairly rigorous gun-control measures, but it seems troubling that there are people who flatly reject any suggestion of how to reduce the incidence of school shootings that doesn’t involve more people having more guns.

We have a very small, but big enough minority of firearm owners, who are slavishly obsessed with worshiping them. And we also have a GOP that has, over 40 years allowed the NRA and industry CEOs to be their King Maker. We have with many topics a "ratings system" made by lobbyists like our "BBB" aka "Better Business Bureau", except their lobbies don't care about "better" and are just their to scare the crap out of the politician they want in their pocket. That lobby will give them an "A" rating if the politician sticks their head up the NRA's ass. But if that politician actually to do the right thing, the NRA will give that politician an "F" rating and threaten to cut off their campaign funds. And because the NRA and CEOs of the industry have marketed firearms as magic cures, "consider this your man card", "the evil liberals are going to eat your babies". And over those same years, has produced a minority of base supporters also big enough to scare the politician into being their bitch.
This isn't about rights over here, it is about one lobby and one industry selling fear to a base to act as a heat shield to protect the profits and expand the markets of the makers. That is why the slavish faction on the nutty far right stupidly think arming more and selling more works.
"The only thing that stops a sane person from passing better safety laws, is a nutcase with lobby."
^^^^^^^ The above line is mocking the NRA's insane moto "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun".

For some reason he doesn't think he needs to have his gun by his side all the time, even though he probably has made some enemies in carrying out his duties.
And I will point out - somebody loaned him a gun.
He may well have had a CCW piece on him - but may have decided a ultra compact .380 wasn' t ideal for a hostage situation.
I don't know if he had a gun - nor do you or anyone else here - but I would be surprised if he was unarmed.
I know I wouldn' t go into such a situation with any light CCW pistol.

The police force had all the training - in taking down a school shooter. It was their job.
The Border Agent did not. There is no reason he would.
What it always comes down to is this - going into a combat situation you have NO way of predicting who will function and who will fold up.
Ask any experience combat vet.
No amount of training will ensure that an individual will operate under pressure - what it WILL do is make those that do function - function more efficiently.

You should look things up before you post stupid shit like that.

If he had a gun with him, why would he borrow one?
I am over this shit. Something has to change. And if it means that fewer people get to have guns, so be it.
How many little kids have to worry about dying by getting shot at school do we really need? Like they aren't going to grow up fucked up after watching their friends and teacher killed while the police stand by waiting for a key?
I'm so done. For one of the few times I agree with 37 - you are a gun worshipper. Everyone else is collateral damage.

So he gets off the hook because he didn't have the "ideal weapon"?
That sounds like a cop-out. When in a crisis do you have the ideal anything?

Then you didn’t read the article. Or - if you did - you seem to have conveniently skipped over the part that mentions that Border Patrol Agents are trained in (among other things):
-Shooter’s mindset
-Reactive shooting
-Judgement shooting
-Risk management
-Tactical awareness
-Critical thinking
-Active threat
-Use of force
-Use of cover
-Anti-terrorism
All of which seem germane to a school shooting. In other words, he WAS trained and he employed that training to do exactly what he did.
