Does your atheism come as a package?
#31
RE: Does your atheism come as a package?
I think it's more the case that even though we know that free will is bunk, we don't care, or at least we don't care in a way that might lead to acknowledgement. We've baked it into so much consequential shit that we aren't willing to abandon that it's truth is irrelevant and we'll come up with just about anything to salvage the idea.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I don't see it as any more right or wrong, or any more serious than any other aspect of folk psychology that we regularly take for granted. It's a model. An outdated one, but so is much else about the mind.

Bingo lolly. There’s no way to determine between actual free will and the illusion of free will.

If there's no difference between genuine free will and the illusion of it, then why not just say you have free will and be done with it? It's like you don't even want to have free will.

For me, it's because I value truth and consistency and freewillnot existing seems to be the most plausible account of what is real and most consistent with materialism with what we know of the brain and things like the Libbet experiments.

I used to believe in freewill. Now I don't. I've become more left wing, more tolerant, less judgemental, and more forgiving as a result.

Does all this overthinking help with life in some way?

I don't understand the usefulness of all these labels and lists.

Why not just say I'm a millionaire when I go in for a loan?  I wish I was.  Good enough for free will...right?

@arewethereyet

Helped me. I guess it depends on what you're dealing with.

I didn't know a political ideology could do all that. My Little Pony made me the opposite of all those things.

I don’t say I have free will, because there’s no way to determine if I do. That said, I behave as if I have free will.

It’s not a question of wanting or not wanting free will. Whether I have free will or not would make absolutely no difference in my life. I don’t spend a lot of time fretting about it.

You can be proven to not be a millionaire. Free will can't be proven false.
