The same bullshit story appears in "luke." Just as stupid.
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?sea...ersion=CEV
Quote:5 Some people were talking about the beautiful stones used to build the temple and about the gifts that had been placed in it. Jesus said, 6 “Do you see these stones? The time is coming when not one of them will be left in place. They will all be knocked down.”
Warning about Trouble
7 Some people asked, “Teacher, when will all this happen? How can we know when these things are about to take place?”
8 Jesus replied:
Don’t be fooled by those who will come and claim to be me. They will say, “I am Christ!” and “Now is the time!” But don’t follow them. 9 When you hear about wars and riots, don’t be afraid. These things will have to happen first, but that isn’t the end.
10 Nations will go to war against one another, and kingdoms will attack each other. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in many places people will starve to death and suffer terrible diseases. All sorts of frightening things will be seen in the sky.
12 Before all this happens, you will be arrested and punished. You will be tried in your meeting places and put in jail. Because of me you will be placed on trial before kings and governors. 13 But this will be your chance to tell about your faith.
14 Don’t worry about what you will say to defend yourselves. 15 I will give you the wisdom to know what to say. None of your enemies will be able to oppose you or to say that you are wrong. 16 You will be betrayed by your own parents, brothers, family, and friends. Some of you will even be killed. 17 Because of me, you will be hated by everyone. 18 But don’t worry![a] 19 You will be saved by being faithful to me.
The godboy is clearly speaking to the disciples who were standing right there but xtians will make up all sorts of excuses for why he was talking to someone else.
What can I say? Xtians are full of shit but we all knew that.

Yeah, one of the defenses I've seen regarding this is the famous "lost in translation" defense that so many Christians love to use to explain why certain words don't mean what they mean, but mean something else. In this case, it was the claim that the word "generation" doesn't refer to a group of people living in the same time frame, but it had a second definition meaning "all Jewish people." In which case then the "generation" still exists because Judaism still exists today. Strange that in other passages Jesus or God refer to "my people" and not "my generation." Not even my "ge-ge-ge-ge-generation."

You'd think an actual "god" could easily avoid such issues, wouldn't you?

I've seen that used a number of times here, and I remember it from my time as a JW. "The Greek word for [term] can be interpreted as [this] or [that] and I'm going to use [that] since it supports my explanation of the verse in question." Which can be combined with "the term [term] meant something different back then" to come up with additional interpretations. If you can juggle words like a pro, you too can interpret the Bible!
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

It sounds to me like more retrospective, false prophecy shlock. You know, like predicting the destruction of the temple. That happened just before the first Gospel was written, so that's why Jesus predicts it - it's all retrospective.
Min, in your quoting of scripture, it just wreaks of "This is what we know happened to Paul and the other apostles, so let's make sure it sounds like Jesus knew it was coming! Score!"
Just dumb.

I don't remember who I've seen use it regarding the word "generation," but I had a fundie friend in person tell me that Jesus turned water into grape juice because the word "wine" had two meanings, alcoholic liquid which we commonly know as wine, and grape juice. So for some reason only the grape juice translation was correct for the story of Jesus turning water into wine.

If the reinterpretation supports the theist's view, he will claim that abomination really means love. Which perfectly explains why theists think a psychopathic god is a good god.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Jesus is not called Immanuel (or Emmanuel) anywhere in the New Testament. If he is, then please provide book, chapter, and verse.
In addition, this is a prophecy that concerns King Ahaz. He is told By Isaiah that the child will be born to a young woman (not a virgin) and that by the time he is grown the threat from foreign kings will be ended when they are defeated..
This promise was kept by 'God' as shown in 2 Kings 16:9.
Assyria defeated the two rival kings and Ahaz and his people would be safe.
2 Kings 16:9
And the king of Assyria hearkened unto him: for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive to Kir, and slew Rezin.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

I was thinking it was here, but it may have been on a different atheist board where some Christian was claiming that "Mary could have called him by that name as a child, you can't prove she didn't, so the prophecy is true."
