Grade school girls can't say No when asked to dance

A back patter?

A shake with one hand and grab your arm/hug with the other?

I have ... but I'm an adult male.

Teaching children that saying "no" to unwanted touching is unacceptable -- where's that going to lead? Teaching boys that "no" is not an acceptable answer to their advances -- where's that going to lead? Telling our kids that rather than exercising critical thinking, they must submit to rules which result in allowing strangers to touch them with no option to refuse that -- where's that going to lead?

There are better ways to teach inclusiveness, ways which do not demand submission. Assign the kids to study groups, in a class, where there's no physical contact but the children are still made to interact with folks of other races, religions etc. This rule is extremely foolish, and sends all the wrong messages.

I’d also like to add, there is a bit of a difference between a handshake, and a four minute slow dance.

Just tryin to keep the conversation lively.

I don't remember reading "slow" dance.

Yeah, but I think a lot of people only go to school dances because their friends are going and they feel socially pressured to go. You don't want kids to have to choose between hanging out with their friends and being part of a special night but being forced to touch people they don't want to touch, or missing out on the event. That's cruel, especially at that age.

Regarding the OP, this may have been acceptable in the 20th century, but not in the 21st.

Good thing I avoided school dances. Who knows what kind of insanity I could have encountered.

Na, the story is hyped. Maybe it's different in the USA, but all the school dances I went to were pretty lame and uneventful. Then again, we never had strange rules like this.

I can’t seem to access the original article.  They aren’t being told they have to say yes to a slow dance?

Not sure what happened to the original link. I think it is this: http://ktla.com/2018/02/10/mom-upset-aft...-to-dance/

I don't see "slow" but that does not mean that there won't be slow dances.

Sounds like the kids are given the chance for an out: "Prior to the dance, which is voluntary, students are told to fill out a card by selecting five people they want to dance with. The administration says if there’s someone on the card you feel uncomfortable with, the student is encouraged to speak up."

Talking about this thread, I brought up how I'd said one time that nine times out of ten, asking a gal for a date or a dance or a cup of coffee, I've heard "no". Learning that early taught me how to deal with it, so that I didn't join the incel #metoo brigade.

Kids need to learn that the world will not necessarily turn your way. Don't worry, you'll live, right?

I hear ya, albeit to me was 1 yes out of 20ish times. Its good to deal with the rejection. My dad told me at the time "Son, the NO is guaranteed, but you might just get a YES.
