Abortion: 10 years as an atheist and I still don't get it

You are clearly not a parent.

You are obviously avoiding the whole notion of spontaneous abortion.

You seem to have some happy clappy idea that it all just works because magic.

From 50 years experience, I can tell you that it does not work like that at all. Not even close.

The religious inflict all manner of horror upon women. It's their MO.

I have no need of your trite religious platitudes. I have lived that nightmare. I have two fine healthy children. But their predecssor was spontaneously aborted. We wept bitter tears. A child. A planned child. A child that we named and even had a relationship with.

And your god saw fit to kill it.

That makes your god a c**t. He/she/it/housecat does not care. You believe in a deity who is randomly cruel.

Grant a child to loving parents? Who will love and cherish and provide for such a child? Nope. Your god apparently prefers to allow the birth of children that will suffer in agony. Because he likes it.

All that superstitious nonsense tells anyone is that your superstition is more important to you than anyone's life, let alone children.

This is what religion does to you. It makes you abdicate normal human morals in favour of some imaginary Santa Claus that fixes everything while fixing nothing.

Frankly, you sound like a kid.

No change is involved, lol.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Any human being with two brain cells to rub together can recognize a moral difference in using a hedge trimmer on a bush, and a human hand.  It doesn't matter whether or not gods exists, and obviously we don't need to talk about gods to show why that would be a problem.  We need only refer to the differences between a bush and a human being.

Hoping to offer some criticism of atheism, instead...you've indicated that you..personally, would not know why that was wrong in the absence of some djinn.  Is that really true?

You are misrepresenting the argument, that's a cute strawman, btw.

The challenge atheists face is theoretical, we are well aware of that as theists. When you say "recognize moral difference" you're simply begging the question and defer to the common sense of any "human being with two brain cells". Why can't you then, use this same common sense when it comes to wonder, purpose, etc. ? Why are you so practical regarding the moral questions, and so stubbornly theoretical regarding God ?
The fact that we know a priori what is right and what is wrong is an argument in the theist camp, so make sure you remember that in your next answer.

(February 26, 2020 at 9:18 am)The Grand Nudger Wrote: Sure they can.  More to the point, supposing god has no bearing on objective moral values anyway.  Either things are morally true with respect to facts about the object or act....moral realism - or they are true with respect to facts about some subject - their attitudes, feelings, and wishes.  Moral subjectivism.

I just finished reading the stanford encyclopedia stuff about moral realism. It's a big begging-the-question morality you have there, any "morally true fact about the object" is a bald assertion, you have nothing to back it up. You have a cold and sober materialistic world with no good and bad tags, you need to deal  with that. That's your atheism. Saying that moral facts = mathematical facts again goes back to very debatable premises.

I don't know that we do.  We certainly spend alot of time on our children explaining right and wrong, however we refer to it.  However, assuming that a priori knowledge is required, why would that be a problem?  Does gods existence have anything to do with whether or not there are married bachelors?

If you say it's question begging, then so be it.  However, if you're rejecting moral realism, you're rejecting the notion of moral facts.  In any case, atheism is a position about gods, not morality.  Atheists can (and do) subscribe to any and every category of moral system ever described by man. This makes any "how can atheists do/say x" question a bit absurd on it's face - we'd have to be more specific. Still, as a question of whether and how...answers are simple to find.

If..however, you would rather argue that atheists are wrong....I'll refer you to the above - your rejection of moral facts as question begging.
