DOJ

If this can happen without SOPA, PIPA and ACTA, imagine what will happen when it does pass.

Also, if we can raid other countries, without evidence and steal their data without giving them a way to defend themselves, why do we need these bills in the first place?

Update, Anon took down UMG and MPAA.org too.

According to the article, the US didn't raid the foreign country, Virgina contacated NZ's authorities and they made the arrest.

Personally, I appload Anonymous for taking down the DOJ (if they did do that since they haven't claimed responsibility for it) in response to that, but the whole thing is ridiculous anyway. It'll just drive the market somewhere else and people'll still keep doing what they're doing.
Just like with Drugs and prostitution and ohter forms of contraband.

In other words, the US will overreact and attempt to use the stupidest methodology to deal with online piracy possible. I shouldn't be surprised that it was Virginia of all places that reacted this way.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925

Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan

Different sites were saying different things, one said that officers in New Zealand showed up arrested people, and took their equipment. that's where I got the raided thing from. If it was incorrect, I apologize.

ALSO, anon did accept responsibility for it.

There are already reciprocal agreements between many countries which make the new US law irrelevant.

The owners of Pirate Bay were arrested charged and convicted in Sweden, and fined millions of dollars. They were young men with no assets. The Pirate Bay remained and remains running.

Personally, I don't believe there IS a problem, except with the stupidly greedy corporations. I have zero sympathy, nor do millions of others, especially youth every where.

For what it's worth - TPB didn't (and doesn't) host any infringing content. They're an index, a search engine - much like google. The judgement against them was bullshit - it was simply more expedient to go after them than to go after people who were actually infringing on copyright.

As you said, the judgement really had zero effect - TPB continues to operate. Other sites (who also hosted no infringing content) have not been so fortunate.

FBI.gov, and Warner Music group join the list.

Hmm. This is getting interesting. It might not actively help anything in the end, but it is still interesting none the less.

RIAA, MPAA, The US Copyright Office, DOJ, UMG, and DOJ.org, FBI.gov, WMG, HADOPI and EMI are some temporary casualties.

Quote:An indictment unsealed today by the Department of Justice claims that MegaUpload has caused the entertainment industries more than $500 million in lost revenue and generated $175 million “in criminal proceeds.”

And here you see exactly what is wrong with letting corporations buy politicians and judges so they can use government powers to settle what should be civil litigation.

We need to take back our government from the greedy corporate whores....and their republibertarianeo-conazi helpers.

I'm aware of that, neither do Bittorrent search engine generally. However, they DO facilitate illegal activity;that is THE purpose for their existence. They act within a legal loophole, which may eventually be closed. Or not.
