When you prayed did it ever work?

This is probably the most 'specific' argument fr0d0 will ever give:

For anything to make sense metaphysically, it is my contention that the christian god is the only satisfactory answer. I work that out continually. Why should I act positively? Because it makes sense in the wider scheme of things that positivity is life. Any question you pick makes sense including God. Minus God it fails to make sense.

And when he gets specific, watch out ... you can't argue against it:

No, we know different things. What I know leads me to believe in God. How much more specific do you need to be? We've discussed this for hours in the past. There is no magic... Just understanding. I can't force the penny to drop for you. You have to understand it yourself. All I can do is try and explain it to you. In this context, on a hostile forum, you are in a team that pressures you to take an opposing view. The cards are stacked against you ever entertaining an idea seriously. I don't fool myself that this isn't the case.

Rayaan doesn't have any good reason to believe. He freely admits that. To him there is a mystery he can't explain, and that's where he is happy for there to be a logical contradiction. Not so for me. I know why I believe. There is no mystery. There is no dissonance to live with.

I've seen atheists give better reasoning for the existence of aliens than I have Rayaan of Allah. Rayaan would try and use the same scientific base. I do think it possible for Muslims to have a correct concept of deity. Their tradition is rooted in mine after all.

The answers you need have to be to your own questions. Your questions here are to further your disbelief. I have nothing new to say to you. You ask me, and other people the same questions over and over. What needs to change is the reason for the question. Once you stop looking to disprove the ideas you may become open to the possibility of discovering answers. The answers may already be there. Just your bias is preventing you from seeing them.

This really isn't the forum for such an endeavour. You don't want to look stupid to your peers. The reason you're here is for their companionship. If you wanted a serious answer to questions on belief the last place you'd look is here. Unless you really liked a challenge. I don't think you do. Am I right? So don't waste my time pretending once more that you genuinely want to know.

The specifics are those.

I never said that. If you think that I admitted what you claim, then show me where I said that.

What I said is this:

What mystery?

Even if someone can't explain a mystery, that doesn't mean that there's a logical contradiction.

Not even this:
(July 8, 2012 at 8:24 am)fr0d0 Wrote: Given a creator god, god is everything. From a vaccuum to the most solid of objects, it's all god. God is not separate.
"God is everything" ... and at the same time, you believe that only Jesus is God, fully man and fully God.

I don't know how that doesn't lead to dissonance.

RE: When you prayed did it ever work?
As I've mentioned time and time again, the whole Genesis thing scared the piss out of me as a kid. At one point I got so terrified that I prayed for God not to kill and/or do horrible shit to all of us for so apparent reason.

Well, nothing too drastic has happened to me, and as far I can tell, there hasn't been any global genocide of some sort. So... I guess? I mean, it was kind of like having a headache, rubbing a cat on your face for 2 minutes, then attribute the headache disappearing the next day to your magic face-rubbing-cat. Whether or not you did some pointless, illogical, ritual, that was going to be the outcome anyway.

Am I making sense here? I don't quite feel I am.

RE: When you prayed did it ever work?
I was an unbelieving agnostic leaning toward Atheism who only believed in things that could be demonstrated via the scientific method. I was not religious and would always change the channel on my radio if I started hearing talk about God, Christianity, etc...

But one day, I prayed for faith in the Christian God once, on a lark in a hospital. Quiet unexpectedly, nine years after that prayer, I had a set of strange experiences that now allow me to be a Christian and to believe in Jesus Christ.

I have to struggle with my upbringing and belief in science and have had to discount some of the stories of the Bible as being somewhat exaggerated, symbolic, or perhaps just made up in some cases, but I think that's okay and I don't think that I will be faulted for these things after I die.
