In Australia, what do you do when there is no party you want to vote for? Can you just hand in an empty ballot?

Yes you can, it's not illegal to (despite what some people think), and they can't tell you otherwise. You only have to put your ballot paper in the box, if it's blank that's not your problem. That said, being required to vote is a very small burdon on citizens in the first place, so why would you want to waste your voice by not voting?

Only in Australia would a political party dare call itself the Sex Party. Although I have to admit I am not a fan of the Sex Party, they seem like a single issue party to me. Also issues like the Censorship of sexually explicit material or banning prostitution don't effect my life at all to be honest.

That's why I'm a member of the Liberal Party! Because I can't stand the way Labor thinks money grows on trees and fucks up our economy, racking up debt every time they get in power. When was the last time they delivered a balanced budget? Nobody remembers!

Compared to other western nations, Australia has been doing fairly well economically. We managed to avoid a recession in 2008-09, which even New Zealand did not. Maybe that is because rapidly developing China has a huge demand for Australian minerals.

However our banks did not experience a sub-prime mortgage crisis like those in the United States and the United Kingdom do. I would credit much better regulation of our banking system here.

Also because of the Global Financial Crisis, tax revenue from corporations collapsed. Even if the Rudd-Gillard government had been good fiscal managers, the budget would have still gone into deficit (though not as much as it has). Although I don’t see deficits and debt as necessarily a bad thing, there can be too much of it. However Australia's public sector debt (which was 21% of GDP in 2010) is very low by International Standards, countries like the United States have public sector debt of over 100% of GDP.

The impression I get of the public figures who believe our public sector is burdensome and our public spending is out of control are those who believe government spending should be much lower than present. Also they would believe that Medicare should be replaced by compulsory health savings accounts.

I do admit that the Rudd-Gillard government (along with State governments of both parties) have not spent and borrowed terribly wisely and there is government spending that can be cut. However our politicians I don’t believe they are as awful as a lot of people in this country believe they are.
