I am new to these forums, therefore I have a hefty amount of things rolling around in my mind that need discussion .. allow me to start with this.
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
Right, so the first 10 words into the bible .. and there is thousands of questions unanswered already.
Who is god ? .. How did he create the heavens and the earth ? Who created god ? ..
I would really like to hear some words from someone who believes in genesis. I have no idea how anyone could possibly find this a feasible beginning to the beauty of life.
I have always heard that the Christian creation story is poetry and wasn't meant to be taken metaphorically. There used to be more information on this view online but apparently it threatened a lot of creationists. When I did a quick google search, I found a lot of Christian creation sites that tried to disprove that a large segment of Genesis is actually poetry and is instead a historical narrative. Part of the problem is that Hebrew poetry is different than Western poetry so there isn't the same rhyme scheme that modern people are used to hearing. Hebrew poetry was meant to be sung and heavily used Parallelism. I think that is why some creationists can claim that biblical experts are wrong when they say that Genesis was meant to be poetry. It doesn't sound like poetry to the creationist and it questions his/her absolute certainty in the literal interpretation of the story. therefore, it can't be poetry.
As to how someone can take it as literal....I don't know. People chose to believe what they wish from the bible. People who are more peaceful and kind pick verses that are about loving others as their main focus while people who are asses typically pick the verses that talk about god's judgement for the basis to live their lives.
Some people get very outraged and say things like "I DID NOT COME FROM A MONKEY." Seriously, I have tried to debate people outside of the internet and it is a little disturbing how outraged and angry they sound when they make that statement. My guess is that there is an emotional reason based on how they view themselves that is threatened by the idea of evolution but not from a deity making their ancestors out of dirt.
One part of the biblical creation story that I found funny was that Adam tells god that he is lonely. God brings all the animals to Adam to name and only then, does he accept that Adam needs a human female.
"So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam[f] no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man."
This is supposed to be an all powerful, all knowing god who created Adam's reproductive system. How could he not know that Adam wanted a human female and not a female llama? Did he expect Adam to mate with one of the animals? It is pretty silly and funny when you think about it.
