Insomniac support and tips
#61
RE: Insomniac support and tips
Yikes, Judi - that can't be comfortable.

It's 6:30 and I may as well get up. Didn't sleep at all. Fortunately I've learned how to relax enough on sleepless nights that I'm physically OK the next day - but if I go more than a couple of days it starts screwing with my mental health.

Yeah I had a crap ton of blankets but it still wasn't enough.

I have to say though, I have an awesome tent. It will sleep 8 comfortably

It depends on what's causing your insomnia. If I have insomnia, which isn't very often anymore, I just smoke weed until I pass out.

I'm not an insomniac, but my girlfriend is probably the worst insomniac I've met in my life due to chronic pain caused by a spinal condition. Sleeping and pain pills will put her to sleep, but then in the morning she'll be in so much pain she can barely sit up. Really she hasn't found a solution and sometimes the sad reality is that there isn't one and you just have to muscle through and do your best.

I smoke a j and put on a ken burns documentary. That gets me a couple of hours every few days or so.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Smoking weed definitely helps, as long as it's indica. Some nights like last night, the pain was bad enough even weed and pain meds didn't do the job. Shit just happens and I deal with it.

For the life of me I can't think of 7 other people I'd fall asleep around. In Mark world you're funking nuts.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Has she tried inversion? Friend of mine with spine/disc compression swears by it. Maybe her back condition won't allow it.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

This only works sometimes. If I'm feeling okay in general, maybe. If the anxiety is high and I'm in a depressive cycle from something, not so much.

I'm also a habitual light sleeper even when I am sleeping well. I blame this on my mother, who has had this issue all her life. And when my brain is fizzing, fuck sleep.

I've found that the Sleep With Me podcast helps. I use my old phone to pipe in 'rain sounds' on Spotify to mask out any apartment noises and provide ambient white noise. Then I put on the podcast at a low level. He already talks in a droning way so it's not hard to find the right volume. That shit is auditory ambien. I can sometimes get 8 hours - even if it's broken into chunks.

Because that's my problem. I fall asleep and can't stay asleep - when the anxiety flares, it's like something constantly gripping my stomach and heart. It sucks.

Also, I would agree with reading a physical book, but only if you have a nifty book light. Otherwise, there are screen filters to help with phones or kindles or whatever. Rereading the Silmarillion has been putting me to sleep because the language is just difficult enough to be boring for most people. Like reading a textbook.

I've had decent luck with the Advil PM, but I don't know if it's placebo.
