Is another reason we need Trident.

So on the one hand you're saying that the link I provided is bollocks (without providing any evidence of your own to refute it) and on the other hand agreeing that we need the US for expertise and services which is justification for renewing Trident.

Which is it in your feels based reality?

And evidence also required from you that the new Trident would be an independent deterrent and not a continuation of the same setup as before.

You seem to like left wing papers. so howe's this:

Reality.......I actually know people who work on this shit and I'm being lectured about reality from someone who's entire life experience comes from the fucking internet, you couldn't make it up.

That article doesn't state that the new Trident would be completely independent of the US though. It just states how dependent we currently are.

For example, will the new Trident still use America's GPS? If not then what will it use instead?

First you leave the EU, and the next thing I hear you're all about new boomers.  Rightward drift?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

But my uninformed opinion is to scrap our nuclear weapons.

And potentially put our country in danger? No thanks.

Any country that has nukes is just one extra chance to put the whole world in danger. If anyone ever actually starts a nuclear war the world is fucked, so the less countries with it the better.

AND it costs a fucking ton of money TOO. What a waste.

Speaking of 200 billion (pounds, dollars, whatever):

Simpson Bowles committee identified $200000000000 in redundant, wasteful, redundant, stupid, redundant, fraudulent and redundant spending in the US government spending EVERY YEAR.

And their report was greeted with universal ennui.

Idunno, $200000000000 sounds like real money to me that could do much good if wrested from the grip of the wasters.

As for nukes, you need 'em to do this:

There are more cost effective ways to deploy nukes. Just not as sneaky.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

A Ripley endorsed deployment strategy is good enough for me.

The point of those subs isn't actually to be sneaky.  They're part of the whole MAD thing from the cold war...where you want the other guy to know that they exist, that even if you managed to obliterate their country in a massive, unilateral nuclear strike.....you're still going to get roasted yourself. Defense isn't the word I'd use for that, because ostensibly, they won't be used in that capacity unless there's nothing left to defend in the first place. I don;t know if they put doubts in the heart of the enemy, or whatever the official line about them might be..either. Anyone who decides to nuke the UK is going to have bigger problems than 4 cheap ass ohio knock offs......

I think it's more a point of national pride, and of wanting to be at that table.

I despise the concept of nuclear weapons with every cell in my body and would see them wiped from the face of the earth in an instant if I had the power to do so.

That being said...I don't, and I also accept the necessity of them, not to mention the inevitability. That horse has looooong bolted, so all we can do is keep them as the weapons that must never be used.

Mhairi Black sums up my feelings on the matter and puts it far more eloquently than I could. Basically the only use for these weapons are for the self esteem of Westminster politicians.
