There is no difference. The term hate speech is BS. There is hateful speech, and that is not nice, but they get to be as hateful as they like in a society that cares about free speech.

As noted above, the Right doesn't want change, they want retrograde movement back to the point they're comfortable with, somewhere about 1960, before Kennedy was elected President. Too many people becoming too equal for them to be at all happy with the current situation.

'The Right' isn't some homogeneous thing spontaneously growing among working class whites who want to see the clock rolled back. It's a highly coordinated, extremely well financed, hierarchical campaign of disinformation on the part of financial and corporate elites and aimed at the working class people the elites need in order to win and hold political power. The media and "ideas" infrastructure these people have put into place in the past forty-odd years is well documented and includes think tanks that provide "intellectual" cover to right-leaning lawmakers; well funded corporate studies that provide bogus 'scientific' findings to counter legitimate science (think climate change); a concentration of media outlets in the hands of an ever dwindling number of players; an army of public relations consultants whose sole purpose is to figure out how to reframe public discourse to serve the interests of the 1%; etc., etc.

The people behind this movement are not by any means stupid. They know exactly what they're doing. It's the marks, the people at the grassroots -- those working class "folks" -- who get roped in by the movement's rhetoric who are the fools. Time and again, they dutifully shuffle out to vote in ways that are demonstratively not in their interests. The genius of it all is that these same people not only don't realize they're being played, but they think they are exercising the highest, most principled reasoning when they parrot the same carefully crafted and paid-for talking points they've been fed. They do the bidding of people who wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire but who will happily pander to their inflated self-image (The Hard Working American People Who Know Better Than Those Elites), stroke their egos, inflame their sense of fear and insecurity, and validate their cultural resentments -- the better to keep them from thinking about what could be legitimate class resentments.

Add in a sub standard education system that doesn't teach the kiddies critical thinking skills and you end up with adults who accept the Dumpster fire of a society and political system we have in the US today.

Yes, it is the same thing. Free speech does not mean only speech that you agree with.

I have to agree with that and courts adjudicating First Amendment issues would generally agree with that too. Slanderous speech and inflammatory speech that incites violence is another ball of wax, though.

Also, I have to say that the current president is a far greater threat to our freedom of speech than some liberal college students. He has the power to push for actual laws that could affect your and my freedom to speak our minds. A few 19 year olds at a liberal California university - who probably don't even vote, sadly - don't have that same power.

They're a latter-day version of the anarchists and "black bloc" groups who, over the years, have often challenged police and broken windows during May Day protests in Seattle and Portland. Their membership is hard to track, but it appears to be expanding beyond the West Coast. They are also embracing other leftist causes beyond just fighting white supremacists.

Still, their numbers are tiny in relation to the mainstream political left. And, say experts, it's misleading for right-wing groups to suggest that the Antifa are more violent than right-wing extremists.

"The far left is very active in the United States, but it hasn't been particularly violent for some time," says Mark Pitcavage, a senior research fellow at the Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism.

He says the numbers between the groups don't compare.

"In the past 10 years when you look at murders committed by domestic extremists in the United States of all types, right-wing extremists are responsible for about 74 percent of those murders," Pitcavage says.

You have to go back to the 1970s to find the last big cycle of far-left extremism in the U.S. Both Pitcavage and McNabb say we have been in a predominantly far-right extremist cycle since the 1990s — the abortion clinic bombings and Oklahoma City, for example. And, more recently, racially motivated attacks such as the one at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, the mass shooting at a black church in Charleston, S.C., and last month's stabbings on a commuter train in Portland.

Yes, antifa and the Black Bloc is nothing new. They've been around for decades.
As for college students loudly speaking their minds - hell, they've been around since my parent's generation and they're in their 70s.

Nor are they far left extremists.  They owe no allegiance to the left..and as such don't particularly care whether or not what they do reduces an unaffiliated (and as they see it, complicit) party's political capital.

Their activities are a reaction to facism, at any cost. They don't seek to advance any leftist political plank whatsoever.
