That's an interesting appraisal of the situation - but does it actually change anything I've commented on? How would he effect that, other than to assure them that they don't need to vote for a racist to have their racist fears legitimized and enshrined by law?

I see where the progressives are coming from. If this guy was already leading in the polls, why would he suddenly decide to ban sanctuary cities? This isn't about progressives not getting everything they want, this is about a candidate who seemingly flip flops on issues which are important right now.
Then let's not have them complain when a Trumptard like Gillespie wins and starts having the state police pick up immigrants and throw them in jail.
You cannot have everything and the fucking "progressives" had better learn that in a big hurry.
Objecting to someone banning sanctuary cities in a failed bid to pander to racist loons is a pretty far cry from demanding "everything".

He was far from perfect -before- he appealed to the loons..and not appealing to the loons won't make him perfect by any stretch.
"Our guy at any cost" gave us a trumpster, it continues to shield and legitimize a trumpster. What would the point of electing a dem be if that dem went ahead and enacted the wingnut portion of the republican agenda? Surely, voters can insist on some minimum standards on important issues?

Any difference between the parties erodes as one side panders to the wingnuts on the far end of the other side. It's one of those things where both sides aren't doing it...and the terminus of that is fairly predictable..not to mention currently noticeable.
It was a dumb move, and voters are understandably disappointed. A candidate and his supporters can kvetch all they want...and insist that it's the -voters- who need to change..or, they can represent their voters and maybe, just maybe, take that little step closer to winning an election, rather than dance backwards to a hood wearing rendition of Don't You Want Me.

There isn’t much of a good response anyone can have to being labeled a racist. Doubly so for a campaign. The “Sanctuary City” issue is overblown pandering that uses the lingo of anti-immigrantion fanatics. Whatever you do with it, you’re getting burned.
Regardless of blame, one thing is certain - Gillespie is hostile to the interests of the DFA. I worry this is a repeat of a certain election. Hm. Slave to the Patriarchy no more
