That I understand. The point of a half-mast flag is to show a sign that something unusual (and usually very sad) has happened. The thing is, these national tragedies are happening so often that there's hardly any time to get them back to full staff. And they keep coming...

Seriously, when this gets added to Mother Jones' list of American mass shootings, This will be the first time we've had four of these incidents in the space of 30 days. And we came close to this, with four mass shootings in the span of 33 days in May-June of this year. This is the new normal now.

There's a cultural problem over there. This ingrained notion that almost everyone needs guns is not shared by the rest of the "western" world. Nowhere else are there so many events like this. Perhaps the two are linked, huh?

Australia changed rather quickly....
The UK, too...
In Portugal, I have no memory of there ever being such easy access to guns... and never have I heard of someone shooting at kids in school.

I know it won't be easy.
There was a multi-generational effort to have a widespread "need" of firearms... and, to fix it, you will now either have a shock therapy approach or a slow weaning... But there seems to be no political drive to follow any of these paths. Business as usual will only make this a more and more normal event.... and, like someone said, it's an event that shouldn't even ever happen!

Really shouldn't ever happen... what the heck goes through anyone's mind to barge into a school and shoot in there?!

Now is not the time to discuss better gun control measures.  We must not politicize this terrible tragedy.  It would be an insult to grieving families to take steps towards reducing the number of school shootings via legislation.

We had a school stabbing incident in 2001 in Red Lion School District (the district where my stepsons transferred from last month)
The elementary school that it happened in is less than ten miles from my home.

It isn't just guns. When you have a crazed person who wants revenge for whatever reason - they will do whatever they need to in order to feel "justified" for whomever wronged them.
