1. No the hill scenes were important as their Lukes way of discouraging Rey . Plus the studio payed a kings ransom to get to that site . So they wanted to milk it for all it was worth .
2.The Rey/ Finn/ Rose dynamic is a semi love triangle i think. If the way Rey looks at the two of them in the last scene is any indication.

They could've given me that impression with twenty fewer minutes of it. He was discouraging me more than her. I kept thinking, "Just leave that old man. His fights are going to be shit anyone because he's fucking old." As for the site, they should have just staged a battle there and made it worth my time.

I would be quite content if they took out all the shitty comedy from SW. (like Luke grabbing his light sabre and throwing it over his shoulder - that's just childish and very unbecoming for a master Jedi)
