The Ego of Impeachment

RE: The Ego of Impeachment
I'm not interested in a government that ignores the law in favor of actions based on political point values. If the president does something illegal, you're supposed to impeach him.

Regardless of whether or not the Republicans are likely to actually do the right thing, impeachment is necessary, because with a President like this, one who blatantly flouts the law and basic human decency, we’re going to have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. Do we want a President who gives a shit about the law and the people he rules, or do we want someone who does whatever the fuck they want regardless of the consequences?

To quote Huey Freeman, in a very different context, “what happened to standards? What happened to bare minimums? [...] Act like you’ve got some goddamn sense, people!” I’d play the full clip, but given that A) it’s a rant about R. Kelly and his jackasstic stans who want to acquit him despite blatantly pissing on 14-year-old girls, so it might not quite be relevant and B) well, given the nature of the show, there’s a couple N-bombs (delivered by Huey in this case), I’m not sure how well it would fly here.

Basically, we shouldn't ignore what he's doing just because we may not get anywhere. People who are believed to have broken the law should answer for it under the law. The system may be crappy, and he may not get in trouble, but going through the motions is the least we can do. Otherwise, we do nothing, which makes us complicit.

I agree. However - sadly I really don't have much faith in impeachment. I want Donny gone as much as anyone else. But congress is way too corrupt to get the job done. They will fumble the ball on the 1 yard line, they are going to drop that pop-fly. Americans on both sides just have their heads too far up their own asses. I wanted Trump to succeed when he was elected. Because if the President succeeds we all succeed as Americans. But with the garbage he has done and got caught there is no question that he should be impeached and removed.

If anyone could benefit from a heroic dose of psilocybin mushrooms, to cleanse their ego, it would probably be Donald Trump. Though he'd probably fight the experience and end up running around naked in front of the white house... you gotta give in when the going gets tough; psychedelics will humble any man.

Nailed it.  Moral choices cannot be based solely on a preferred outcome.  Given what we know about Trump's behaviour, it would have been unethical for the House not to impeach him.

Not to cast aspersions, but the argument, 'He shouldn't be impeached because he's not going to be convicted' is a rather Trumpian point of view - that everything is transactional.

Trump succeeding was never going to be good for the american people. Case in point...this is what success looks like, for him, lol. It's naive to imagine that americans do well if the president does. That depends entirely on what the president plans to achieve.

Wait - you mean that steering military flights to his golf and hotel properties in Scotland doesn't benefit the average American?

I'm so shocked I may have to lie down.

Dems don't like Trump. Most people don't. It really isn't about him being corrupt or holding our leaders accountable. It is because they do not like him. However it is helpful they have something on him that can get him potentially impeached. I think it is rather foolish for anyone to believe that the left is doing this in the name of upholding the law. It is for political points. Dems likely have just as much corruption as the Right does. And anyone who doesn't think so is rather foolish too.

If impeachment were solely about scoring political points, you'd have had a lot more impeachments than just the 17 in your history.
