RE: Speed-of-light experiments give baffling result at Cern

No updates but plenty of explanations: At the New Scientist, they had an article on how this might prove extra dimensions:
Quote:Instead, the result could be the first evidence for a reality built out of extra dimensions. Future historians of science may regard it not as the moment we abandoned Einstein and broke physics, but rather as the point at which our view of space vastly expanded, from three dimensions to four, or more.
.
.
.
The trick is to send neutrinos on a shortcut through a fourth, thus-far-unobserved dimension of space, reducing the distance they have to travel. Then the neutrinos wouldn't have to outstrip light to reach their destination in the observed time.
In such a universe, the particles and forces we are familiar with are anchored to a four-dimensional membrane, or "brane", with three dimensions of space and one of time. Crucially, the brane floats in a higher dimensional space-time called the bulk, which we are normally completely oblivious to.

Zaki hasn't found this thread yet?? ![Dodgy Dodgy](https://atheistforums.org/images/smilies/dodgy.gif) or doesn't understand it?
Still waiting for news... I'm patient

It looks like three errors were found in the OPERA's calculations, reducing the time correction from 60 x 10 -9s to 3 x 10 -16s.

So much for the hype.
I must say that this hullabaloo has been a great disservice to scientists as it gives ammunition to the anti-science factions of this world that scientists cannot be trusted.

If the theory that neutrinos can travel faster than light had been proven, the scientific community would be overjoyed. Nothing science loves more than truth. It would have definitely changed physics, but unlike religion, science's responsibility is truth and not ancient, irrational claims.
As a chistian I know put it, after I explained to her cern's claims- "You never know, neutrinos could be angels... god's precious speckles."
Instead scientific, skeptical minds collaborated, finding errors in the experiment/claims, and electromagnetic radiation (as far as we know) is still the fastest. I can understand that cern was excited to have their findings tested, so I don't find them untrustworthy for that.
The anti-science factions will and do make up shit, science doesn't and won't. A mistake, at least, proves that someone did something.

The anti science factions will do that regardless, chuck. To me, it strenghtens my trust in it, It means they'll do and redo any calculations and won't fear coming with a correction.
Its still a long way from "LALALALALALA, I CAN'T HEAR YA, GODDIDIT, PERIOD!"

That is just how I see it. Unlike the religious factions who assail them using a text that was archaic a thousand years ago, scientists will say, "OK, so what did we learn here," and the quality of process will improve as a result of the questioning.

Yes, it's always been a strength that science can self-correct. The problem I have here is the hype that was created even before the preliminary results were verified. I know it's has a lot to do with getting crucial funds for such huge undertaking. But the negative side is this sideshow can also undermine the process.

Faster-than-light neutrino experiment to be run again

Now the measurements will be performed statistically to achieve the desired result. This is a mess whichever way you look at it... I imagine CERN must be hating themselves right about now.

Religious shits would call it a "miracle," chalk it up to their stupid god and never dare to try to repeat the experiment.
I'll take science over those morons.

Me too Min, I'll take the persuit of fact and truth over defending a book of myths and lies anyday.
