I promised to take A Certain Person on a trip to the LOTR locations in NZ, especially including the Hobbiton site at Twizel. I'd have much preferred to take Sam, she fell in love with the films and Frodo in particular, but yeah. Maybe I'll go on my own one day.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

I can see the quarry where they filmed Helm's Deep from my lounge window.

And the site used for Rivendel is about 15 minutes' drive from my place.

They left one of the set arches in place.

Yeah, they get everywhere!

Do you know the main lesson provided by the Star Wars prequel trilogy (apart from not using annoying CGI characters)?.

When you start cloning NZers, galactic civilisation falls. (Yes, the actor who played Jango Fett and all the clones is a Kiwi).

To be fair, the quarry looks like just a hill that's been cut into.

There's no evidence of anything there any longer from the movies.

See, I really want to do a months long tour of Europe.

Starting in the UK and making my way across the continent, visiting all the awesome archaeological sites.

Wait a minute, there, ladies... Portugal has tons of cool archaeological sites, spanning from cave paintings, through dolmens, the romans, the muslims, and then the catholics.
And we top it all off with the best food in the world! (forget about those pesky frenchies... what do they have? french fries?)

For all you fans, is it too geeky to mention that I'm going to have this collection?
