Quote:I'm amused to hear that this is a forum where we're not supposed to criticize each other. That was not my impression in the past. There is a difference between criticism and being an insufferable ass and frankly, you are the last person on this forum who gets to complain about criticism avoidance considering the intellectual cowardice you displayed in the Russian/Ukraine thread.

Belacqua is like one of them monied old boys from Yale and Harvard, and as lacking in actual brains as many of them are.
It's funny now, but y'all are gonna be sad when Captain Highbrow hits back with a quote from Ozonides.

No, I think he just wears Harvard tie and Yale cuff links, and resent his parents for not having enough money to donate to the university to persuade the admission office to turn a blind eye to his transcript. Unlike the eponymous character from the sitcom Frasier, who, when contradicted, is wont to say “But I went to Harvard….” because he actually did go to Harvard. RE: There are no answers in Genesis

FWIW, the most prominent self-identified atheists on AF do seem to think a literal account of Genesis is the only valid one. It is the one belief such atheists share with religious fundamentalists. I am not saying that common belief is indicative of any particular mindset. At the same time, it is not complimentary to either IMHO.

I am unsure how you are supposed to pick which parts of the Bible are supposedly literal and which are not. Apparently, we need clergy to explain it to us but they seem to disagree. I can't base a belief system on that.
I don't believe Genesis has to be literal. I'm saying that Christianity makes no sense unless there was a REAL fall.
Without a fall, Genesis is just a musing on "why isn't this world perfect", with a really shitty answer, and Christianity is an answer to a problem that doesn't exist. RE: There are no answers in Genesis

No, we just think non-literal accounts of genesis are arbitrarily made up and do not reflect genesis. God did not supposedly give onto his believers any of the non-literal accounts, Instead he gave onto them an singular account which embarrasses even his slightly less embarrassing followers, so they had to pretend it is not what it most manifestly is. |
