What was born in 2012, awakened for a spell in 2015 and then came to life again in just the last couple days?
Answer: this thread.
Gee, I wonder if I responded to this thread in either of its past lives? I'll go ahead and respond now and then see if I did before.
Today's answer: nothing made me do it, I just stopped spontaneously when I got a little further along in adolescence.
Yep, I did. Post #22. What a lot of blather.

My parents raised me to think for myself. I danced around with theism around 8 or 9, it was a brief moment of "wtf" and "really?" After that I never even bothered with studying it in any way. I keep hearing you should read the bible, study this or that and it took very little of my time to see it was a total waste of time.

Jesus appeared to me in a dream and told me that if I didn't become an atheist, he'd send me to Hell.

I was 50. The attributes of consciousness and willfulness fell out of my God-concept, then later than year I read the argument of improbability in Dawkins' The God Delusion. I was an atheist before I finished reading the book.

Ever read anything by Robert Green Ingersoll?
I read selections of his ideas in The Quotable Atheist, another favorite book. I underlined seven of his quotes. Otherwise I have not read his works. Do you have a recommendation?

I can't really name one particular event or thing that lead me away from religion. It was a few things:
The resistance I was met with any time I questioned my father about something that didn't make sense concerning religion/god.
The half-truths and circular logic that never really made sense to me as a kid.
The overall attitude that many religious people take that wanting to obtain knowledge is somehow sinful or bad. The overall idea that we are supposed to just praise god for all of eternity and not really concern ourselves with "Earthly pleasures."
Also, my father used to constantly try and scare us about the rapture. I really just never understood why a supposedly loving god would supposedly let us get tortured for not accepting the "mark of the beast" if we were left behind. Seemed insane to me.
Interestingly enough, my father, from the outside, does not seem like a religious man. He drinks heavily, does drugs and is openly hateful towards minorities. He's a walking contradiction.
So yea I finally just started questioning all of this stuff in my teen years and realized when I was 16 or 17 that none of that shit made sense to me and I probably started identifying as an atheist at around 17 or 18. Today I'm 25 and I'm still happy as hell I don't believe in any of that garbage. It's simply not necessarily and doesn't actually give us answers to anything we need to know. It truly is pointless.
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.

QFT although pretty much any member of the god squad would suffice.
CofE primary school + zealous head teacher who liked to pontificate and preach to us = an entire class of atheists.
