They view it as a form of socialism, without even realizing that the roads they use, the police, fire, library, public schools... all of it is essentially socialism. It's money collected from everyone, and distributed in a way that all the public benefits from it.
Cris had a great attitude about it. Better than mine. I've been in a perpetual state of pissed off about this since 2002, when I realized nobody gave a shit.
I find it quite odd when people bitch about socialism as if our country isn't already quite socialized as it is. It shows an alarming lack of general knowledge. Quite scary if you want me to be honest about it. Couple that with the religious zealotry that runs rampant here and it is no small wonder my partner and I plan to move to Europe in the future.
I am more like you when it comes down to it. I am quite pissed by the fact that we have so many sick and suffering people here that could be helped but everyone is so damned selfish and uncaring that they can't be bothered to help out, even by paying just a few more dollars in taxes.

First off I have not been to a doctor since 89 or 90. Because of my
lifestyle i lessen my chances of cancer and other diseases. If i
am hit by a car auto insurance will cover it, I checked. Your
thinking rewards bad behavior. Am i really being selfish or is the
fat guy being selfish eating crap and wanting others to pay for
his unhealthy lifestlye? Of course people should be able to buy
health care and not be turned down for any pre -existing condition
I just don't think i should have to pay for some fat idiot who
will end up going to a doctor many times in a year because of his
lifestlye instead of changing his lifestlye for the better, ( of
course some of you will say he tries hard to lose weight) How much
will it cost is my main concern. no one knows, why the big
secret? aA few hundred dollars a year, that's a laugh,If it was a few hundred a year i would not complain I
hear it might be more like 400 to 500 a month which will hurt me a
lot Sorry guys i guess we can't agree on this. My hope is Obama
gets his ass kicked in November, and i CAN'T STAND THAT RELIGIOUS NUT ROMNEY.

Let's approach this differently.
Do you appear in public?
Yes?
Are you vaccinated?
No?
Then you're rewarding bad behavior (IE YOU) by riding off of herd immunity.
How hard is it to understand that you don't want to contribute to disease in your community? And how hard is it to extend that understanding such that OTHER people don't you sick?
If you are vaccinated, you're contributing to herd immunity. Congratu-fucking-lations.
Think you can help strengthen herd immunity for our immunologically compromised, our infants, our elderly? Maybe by helping sick people get healthcare? Is that a new, difficult concept?

however limited your breadth of thought concerning your fellow countrymen, at least you appear to be going to the bank with it. and you absolutely will, if you find out one day that your armor has failed you and that awesomely healthy lifestyle lands you with calcium-deficient bones and you can't stand. luckily for you, you will still be covered, regardless of your feelings on it.
on a side note (and this is for your benefit), if you haven't been to the hospital since 90 and you don't live in a bubble, then you at least need a tetanus shot. next time you cut yourself doing anything and your jaw locks up, you'll get the pic. or even walking thru your own basement and picking up random airborne mold spores for years before they efflorescence shows up on the foundation walls and you realize what happened. then again, nah, you'll be fine. don't mind me.

That's not necessarily that far out of the ballpark, depending on the group and plan.
I just checked rates for individual plans from an HMO, and for someone my age, the premiums range from about $200/mo for $35 copay/$7500 deductible up to $500/mo for $25 copay/$0 deductible.
Obviously if your employer picks up part of the tab, that would change the rate, as would being in a different group or getting coverage from a different provider.
Personally, I have a high-deductible plan backed by a health savings account which results in more reasonable premiums. The worst case scenario on that plan (premiums + deductible) was a hell of a lot better than the best case (premiums only) of the traditional plan my employer no longer offers (due to no one subscribing to it).
P.S. To the OP: Waaaaaaaahhhhhhhh

Thought a lot of you guys were up in arms because your government pays for people to go to homeopathy.
C.W, its not that people don't want to help out, it's that they are forced to help out, there is a difference. What if they don't want to help a particular person? Most want to help kids (I'd always keep kids on it), but helping out an adult who has an unhealthy lifestyle in that way isn't really helping them, it removes additional incentives for them to help themselves, they don't bear all the costs of their actions.
I like being able to discriminate in who I give money to, a guy comes up with his hands out and belongs to a racist organisation or something? I don't want to give him a cent. And likewise, some people will find my views offensive, I shouldn't be able to enlist the government's aid in taking money from them to give to me. And yes Moros, everyone be allowed to shun me and refuse to even speak to me, deal with me...
Moros, herd immunity? Sure, it's great, it helps me and everybody else at the same time (yah!) but you shouldn't force it upon people. The first person to come at me with a needle when I haven't given consent is getting punched in the face. It's not that I'm against helping people, I'm against being forced to help people.

I see your point, Stue, but I just can't get over the fact that the health care system in our country is so badly broken. I want universal health care for our people. I don't think health care should be something you have to pay for. It is essential to maintain life. Now with that said we as a society should also exert more pressure on people to live more healthily. All I know is this, it's broken beyond belief and we need to do something to fix it. I don't know exactly what. I can just say this, at least Obama is trying to open the subject up.
