I think you have to set that aside the fact that the British basically strutted into our national capital facing little resistance to speak of. They left with the same relative peacefulness, too. Americans were frequently known to run away from the British, sometimes with just a minimum of resistance, right through Washington instead of making an attempt to defend it. New Orleans really didn't do anything except make up for what has to be the most humiliating defeat American arms ever suffered. Really, the only true defense America put up against the British march to Washington was not from its army but from a group of grounded flotilla men led by Commodore Joshua Barney, probably my favorite unsung American war hero.  People like this guy are why I'm ashamed to be an American. Some Americans know that America's power doesn't make up for the ignorance of the general population. Some Americans know more than three motherfucking things. Please do not judge all Americans by this fucking stupid display of "hey look our dick is bigger" bullshit. 42

The British had thought to stop America's growing expansion westward beyond the Mississippi River but their plans were brutally thwarted when they clashed with Jackson at New Orleans.

All of this a lesson that would not be fully appreciated until centuries later.
-Do not engage the indigenous in asymetric warfare far removed from your lines of supply without adequate means to replace casualties faster than they can be incurred. I have to give a nod to the British in this as well, in the end, their troubles with the colonies just weren't worth as much as it cost them. If the British wanted to legitimately crush the States at any point in the first hundred years or so of their existence, if they were committed to doing so completely, they could have easily done so. I guess it just wasn't topping any lists of priorities.

The war had become unpopular in Britain and it just wasn't feasible for them to continue the war here. The tide of the war had turned against them. It became too costly and they were fatigued.
