You see, you added the word legitimate just so you could control the criteria. Lots of secular societies have persecuted homosexuals. Cuba kicked out them out. Soviet Russia banned homosexuality during Lenin's rule. Whether or not it's 'legitimate' is a subjective thing.

As for the article, even if a 6 year old has a gender identity, they don't have the proper ability to express it. The rules are the rules. Some kooky parents don't get to change them.

Let me clarify "legitimate". A reason based on evidence that it actually causes some degree of actual harm, as opposed to being societally innocuous. Not Cuba, nor the Soviet Union produced any reasonable reason for the removal of homosexuals, unless you'd like to provide one for me to look at?

The whole point is that on its own, homosexuality does no harm to society, and claims that it does so boils down to that other people in that society think it's icky.
Well they can get the hell over it. I think gum chewing is icky, but I'm not going to tell people not to chew gum.
If you believe it, question it. If you question it, get an answer. If you have an answer, does that answer satisfy reality? Does it satisfy you? Probably not. For no one else will agree with you, not really.

While I'm not sure how gender identification works in children this young (I could send some e-mails out to professors that I know specialize in child development and gender identity, but unless someone wants me to, I am too lazy), banning her from using whatever bathroom she wants is stupid. Who cares? If you're six and you wear a dress and have long hair, don't you think you'll go into the stall labeled with someone in a dress with long hair? So, she uses the women's restroom. No one is going to be sharing that stall with her. Plus, when I was her age, we had a bathroom in our classroom that everyone used. This is incredibly dumb.

As a side-note: I'm pretty sure this would be too young to make a reasoned choice about one's gender, but gender is an arbitrarily social-construct anyway. Let her wear and act as she wishes and don't worry about her gender until she is ready to sort those feelings out herself.

And if the school has a rule that boys use the lav with "boys" written on it, then it doesn't matter if you play dress up or not, you stick with the rules, work with the system, or go someplace where they are devoid of such rules. And I can put on black face, but I still won't get the special Ethiopian discount for medical school here.
If she says she's a girl, then she is a girl, regardless of biology...or at least that's what was argued to me in another thread.
No. The child is a six year old boy...and six years old is too young for any child to make that kind of determination...IMO I think the parents are more behind this!

Nobody said that.

Disagreeing with a lifestyle is one thing. You advocate the denial of equal rights to gay people. That is hateful, and whether or not you agree with that is irrelevant.

And what if it is proven that the parents aren't behind this?

What if it is proven that the child is the one making said assertions and the parents merely are not overriding what "she" says?

A thought experiment.

Then the parents are pretty fucked up, too.

The kid is fucking SIX.

And here's something I've just noticed: Where are our resident transsexuals? VLB and Tara should probably be putting their 2 cents in, because, quite frankly, since everyone in this discussion (at least as far as I know) seems to be okay with the set of genitalia we were born with, we're clearly in the dark.

Please explain how "the parents are pretty fucked up"?

Personally, I'd like to see what the body of child development researchers think about such -- partially because I'd expect there to be a reasoned basis to accompany their appraisal.

Quote:I think it's debatable as to what they're feeling at that age.
I think the school has it right however. At this point it's a chic with a dick, as they say. Bathrooms are meant for the gender specified and since 'she' has a penis she is not entitled to use the boys room.

I'm confused now, is it that she can't use the boys bathroom or the girls? Either way, can't this be remedied by a uni-sex bathroom? Or if there isn't one, just one of the office or nurse office bathrooms would work. I agree that the boys bathroom shouldn't have to accommodate her, and the girl's bathroom is debatable as to whether they should accommodate considering her anatomy.

What does Colorado law say on the subject?
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

For encouraging the idea....if they didn't put it in the kid's head from the get-go which is what I really think.

When I was six I wasn't concerned with the idea that I should have a twat instead of a pecker. I didn't even know what a twat was.

Although later on I voted for Nixon twice which should have been a clue.
